Veteran St. Petersburg Police Officer David Crawford was shot and killed Feb. 21 as he and another officer investigated a report of a prowler at a downtown residence.

Crawford's killing came one month after two St. Petersburg Police officers were shot dead — the city's first officers killed in the line of duty in 31 years.

Police arrested 16-year-old Nicholas Lindsey Feb. 22 after a 24-hour manhunt. Lindsey turned himself into authorities. He gave police several stories, but ultimately admitted to shooting and killing Officer Crawford.

He is a STUDENT and was probably identified as needing help by his kindergarten teacher only to be ignored by PINELLAS SCHOOLS!! Get rid of the magnets and fundamentals and get these troubled elementary kids into alternative schools with mentors. Why are we not utilizing our own professional athletes and corporate leaders to speak in small groups and become strong male role models in our schools??? Kindergarteners get away with rule breaking on a daily basis and parents are fed up! The district needs to step up NOW!

Kinda surprised it's only been the first in 31 years. Brother's friend was shot and killed in a mugging two years ago, figured it's got its fair share of violent crime. Happen to know the guy who did it?

St. Pete hasn't been a "nice area" in decades. They've just been outclassed slightly in crime by their bay area neighbors.

I was surprised myself when I heard the last shooting of an officer was 31yrs ago.

We lost a cop in Boca Raton recently too. Tragic accident man, the officer hit a palm tree on his way to work.

There was a full blown investigation, which turned out the palm tree was at fault. We closed down the busy state road 7 highway (441) for his funeral.

My friend (officer) was executed last month, think it made it on to Glen Becks show. He was talking to a guy from his car and the guy pulled a gun and shot him in the head, then leaned in and shot him 2 more times to make sure he was dead. Friend was 27 and getting married next year, never had a chance wasn't able to defend himself and never drew his weapon. Manhunt went on for a few days after.

The procession we were in was over a mile long, had cops come from every state including hawaii to attend the funeral (she was in short sleeves, in jersey in january...). Was pretty powerful shit.

Its really shows how much of a brotherhood there is after a officer of a firefighter dies.

I went to a funeral in Oakland 2-3 years ago for 3 officers that were killed, and officers from all over the country just didn't show up but officers from England/Ireland were in attendance as well.
