    Buffy movie/series reboot?

first I have heard of this. anyone else able to dig up new info?

    http://www.joblo.com/index2.php

Rumors have been swirling about a possible reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a while now, but when you get the press release from Warner Bros, you know it's official. Fans rejoince/lament:

Atlas Entertainment announced today it is rebooting the beloved franchise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Warner Bros. Pictures. Atlas’ Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the feature film alongside Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, How to Train Your Dragon, The Departed). Whit Anderson is writing the script.

“Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy,” said Roven. “There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen. We’re thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be.”

And that's it. No mention of Joss Whedon or Sarah Michelle Gellar, as presumably this reboot will be done with neither party involved. Whedon had been offered the film at one point, but he shot them down as he didn't like the studio's new plan for the character. But uh, who needs that clown right?

Are fans loyal to the character, or to Whedon and Gellar's portrayal of the character? Is this new film a godsend or sacrilege? I don't think I'd be too pleased if this was a show I held dear, but you true fans out there please go ahead and speak your mind.

I'm not ready to say it will fail terribly but I am very skeptical.

So they removed the main two things that made the entire series NOT a pile of steaming shit? Yeah this is going downhill fast in a storm of overused hollywood tropes that got boring after the 20th time we saw them.
They really should just steal that xxcdcdxdcxdc idea and do 2 hours of River kicking ass.

Proof that America is severely lacking creative or scientific innovation these days.

    whedon's response from eonline:
Kristin, I'm glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, "Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER." Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, "I'll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!" Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie. Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

Joss has always been hit-and-miss in my opinion. He mixes campy action/comedy and serious drama a little too liberally. I would love to see an all-around more serious version of Buffy in the tone of Blood, or a funnier version (more likely with the how to train your dragon guy).

I was getting really tired of the teen brigade brandishing their wooden stakes, antique axes and the thing vampires have nightmares about, pistol-sized crossbows...

Concur, no Whedon or SMG is a deal breaker, not to mention they have to replace ALL of the supporting characters from the show or write them out entirely, no since in calling it Buffy other than to try and cash in off the name. /garbage
