Computer loads to black

I just got back from being out of town for a few days and realized that I had left my computer on the whole time. I tried to start up Firefox, but it wouldn't start up and so I tried to restart the comp, but it would only load up to black. I can see the mouse and move it around, but not anything else. Any suggestions?

Can you boot into safemode normally?

edit: are you able to access task manager on a normal boot/safe mode networking?

So you can visually see the PC going through bios/post but windows login screen or after logging in you get black/nothingness?

Can you manually start explorer.exe using task manager? If you're getting a mouse, that's potentially a good sign...

Haven't done install/repair disc yet. Can't get task manager anywhere.

Try booting to last know good configuration, press f8 during normal boot procedure to access prompt; same way to access safe mode.

Might be completely unrelated. But when my wifes comp goes into sleep mode for about 24hrs+ it will do this. I normally just pull the power cord and wait 10min for all the power to drain out.
