Video and Film People - Help

Hello Tech, let's hope people read this...

So here's the deal, I have a friend from high school who I'm helping who wants to make several product videos. While I have an understanding of the backend editing and IT/marketing tactics, I'm nearly clueless on actually creating the video itself. He's a photographer so lighting/backdrop probably isn't an issue. Budget is probably mid-range, not looking to go on the cheap as they need to look professional but also not on an unlimited budget.

    I have two questions...

    1) What kind of camcorder would be best for this? They seem to be priced from $1000-$20k+... what features should I look for and does anyone have a suggestion?

    2) What kind of equipment would we want to go with the camera? So far what I can think of is an adjustable tripod to hold the camera in place, a rolling camera cart, and a monitor to view shots and playback. If I'm missing something and/or anyone else can suggest something better that would be ideal.

    1. How advanced of a camera are you looking for? I'm not an expert on cameras, but do you want one like this:

    Or like this...

    2. Depends on what kind of shots you want. Tripod at the absolute minimum. Good for still, pan, tilt, shots. Cart if you think you need it (or just find a smooth rolling cart cart and stick the tripod on it). If going completely hand held, you want a Steadicam mount or the cheaper Fig Rig to keep the camera from wobbling.

Lastly, do not forget about your audio. Try to avoid using a camera mounted mic as they are invariably omni-mics (meaning they get EVERYTHING) and get a lav mic on someone if they're talking. Be sure to get a recording of ambient sounds (just leave the camera recording for 30 seconds or so) that you can use to underline any clip transitions so the audio transition isn't awkward.

Many thanks for the suggestions, they are greatly appreciated... do you have a suggestion for a cart we should purchase to stick the tripod on?
