need help from cosplayers for link costume

hi internet, in the middle of making a costume for my son since he really wants to be link for halloween and looking for tips. specifically for the shield.
i was originally going to just get a plank, cut shield shape, stencil on the front and voila have a shield. then my boyfriend googled and showed me that we could buy them and i realized the idea i had would look like suck.
so basically has anyone else done this and willing to share tips on how you did?

also, http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Twiligh...431143&sr=8-10 ? i don't want to get him one of the poly resin ones since it will be played with, are the rubber ones any good?

yeah, that was my other idea. just get a thick plank and carve it down, then get adult size tights and make my boyfriend be adult link and carry the retarded plank hylian shield.
