We have confirmed the following issue in regards to the new "Clear System Cache" feature which was added during the Xbox 360 system update on Aug. 11, 2009.

    [Confirmed Issue]
    - Upon using the "Clear System Cache" feature, the PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY would be uninstalled.

We ask that you not use the "Clear System Cache" feature until the issue is addressed.

If you have experienced the above issue, you will need to re-install the PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI. Please be aware that the following data will be reset in the process.

    - Member settings
    - Email account settings, address book, and email content
    - Sent/received messages
    - Option settings
    - Data saved in the file management folder (such as screenshots)
    - Files saved in the PlayOnline Viewer (such as macro settings)
    - Macro content
    - Map markings
    - Part of the configuration settings
    - Desired sort settings (Will return to default settings)
    * Character data will not be impacted because they are saved on the server.

I didn't know about this. How would you go about deleting the install data from Final Fantasy off your HDD in the first place, since its not listed in your memory listings? (aside from a full wipe)

No clue, I dump my cache on 360 routinely but I had trouble last week a when I was on my 360. Luckily I play on PC as well on PS2, really just depending where the hell I feel like sitting. But it wasn't a big deal, I ended up just reinstalling POL and everything was good.

Like they said this has never once happened in the past so I figured the recent update had something to do with it.

And for the record you always could have cleared cache, most people just had no clue how to do so before the XBL update.

Obviously SE is trying to force people to make room for FFXIV.

I think you had to load up PoL and click uninstall, tho i'm not sure.. (never done it, this is just what i can remember)

This bug kinda helped me tho. Since i sent my xbox off for repairs (which they replaced) i had been unable to run PoL and play FFXI on 360 because it would come up with an error message, so i was unable to unistall and reinstall. The only way i knew how to uninstall would of been to reformat the HDD.

Clearing the cache and then reinstall means i can now play on 360 fine :D

A Notice to Xbox 360 Version Users (Nov 2nd)

Typically, many users of the Xbox 360 version of FINAL FANTASY XI will shut down the game via the "Xbox Guide Button" located on the controller. However, we have confirmed an issue where if you attempt to shut down via the "Xbox Guide Button" while the PlayOnline Viewer and/or FINAL FANTASY XI is running, it may cause the Xbox 360 to not be able to properly read the disc.

Until this issue is addressed, we ask that you shut down the PlayOnline Viewer through the "Exit Viewer" option and FINAL FANTASY XI through the "Shut Down" option in-game.

For users who are experiencing the issue, please contact Xbox Support for assistance.

So Monday I was playing on my new 360 MS sent me (since my last one red ringed) doing Dynamis-Xarc. Finished up and did /shutdown like a good player and like the lovely 360 version likes to do, it shutdown to a black screen. (my old xbox did this all time too, does yours?).

When it does this, you can leave it on the blackscreen for days - it'll never hit the xbox live dashboard.

So I shut down the system manually and went to bed. Last night I was going to mess around on the xbox again and it won't read my disk and I immediately remembered this post.

Anyone else had this problem? Says the solution is to call Xbox support. But I seriously got my xbox back last Friday and I really don't want to call them and have to send it in again. I'm curious what they tell you to do.

I really want to know what kind of awesome coding they did where if the game doesn't properly shut down, it breaks your disk laser...

I had this problem many times with my new xbox as well, nothing is wrong with your disc. The only solution is:
    1. reformat the hard drive (yes, have to delete everything ><)
    2. Reinstall Playonline/FFXI

From what I read I believe what caused this was the xbox update that let you copy games to hard drive, somehow that borked playonline. I gave up doing this after the 3rd time, it happens very frequently. 4+ hours of installing updates is infuriating.

the 'NGE' or w/e update to Live ruined POL and various other games that utilizes the HDD (to optimize games) so it does happen with a lot of games.

When you reinstall everything to the HDD it does seem to solve the problem, but try switching which disk the 360 reads from the startup then stops. (If you have a WoTG disk and a collection disk)

It won't because it's an issue with the dashboard update much like ever since that update clearing cache completely removes FFXI and some other games and occasionally licenses.

Yeah.. I'm gonna try reinstalling FFXI, wish for the best. Just pisses me off that I *DID* use /shutdown and the game code didn't clean up properly. So because THEIR code is sloppy I lose my couch-ready position. When I pay for something I expect it to work as intended, that *is* SE's motto, right?

I did a little digging and found this, going to try installing again in hopes that it will work.

need 2 boxes to do it, but worth a shot if you have them.

Sorry to necro this but this was the only thread I found that is similar to the problem my friend is having. Since the 360 patch to fix the log out problem, my friend will log in but he gets booted off because PoL nor XBL recognize that he is on the server. Takes him literally 30 times to establish a working connection. This has been happening to him for about a month.

Anyone have any problems similar to this and know how it can be fixed? Thanks.

Hi. I just joined this site because I had a problem with FFXI on Xbox today and I found this thread which is pretty similar to my problem. I have been playing on PS2 on and off since the NA release. I just got FFXI for my Xbox so my girlfriend can play with me. I installed and updated it two days ago. We played together for the first time yesterday. I turned the game off with the "shut down" feature in game. Today, I went to turn the game on and got the error referenced in this thread - unable to read disc. I called Xbox support and they had no idea how to fix it. I called Playonline and they told me the only way to fix it was to reformat my hard drive. I did that. Now FFXI is updating all night.

My concern is that I don't want to have to go through this frequently. Next time, I'm going to try shutting the game down the old school way before the "shut down" feature existed - by logging off exiting from the Playonline viewer. If that doesn't work, I am willing to buy another Xbox and try the solution explained by Kainos above. I would rather not do that if I don't have to though. This thread is from 2009. Does anybody have any advice about this issue?
