The Discovery of Chip-chan
Chip-chan (real name unknown) was first discovered by 4chan’s /x/ on August 6th, 2011 in an unsecured webcam thread. She was sleeping so deeply that the poster who found her commented, “Some chick with her legs in her chair and text everywhere. I think she’s dead.“(pictured)
That was how she got /x/’s attention. For the next several hours, everyone made comments on the small movements she made, believing that it was gravity doing it’s job on a lifeless body.
One poster noted, “2 hours ago, someone has been watching for an hour. No movement at all.” However, all thoughts of her being dead were discarded when she awoke for a moment to scratch her leg. Those in the thread were still confused with the whole situation: an unknown Korean woman sleeping in an uncomfortable position for an extended period of time, surrounded by water bottles and signs scratched in Korean and hung around her desk and her windows.
She surprised everyone by waking up, but then proceeded to hide behind one of her signs to use the laptop (which could be seen on her second camera). Due to the low quality of her cameras, to this day we have no idea what she is possibly looking at.
Everyone in the thread wanted to know what her signs were about. One poster consulted Google Translate, while a few others asked friends who knew Korean. Due to the bad quality of Chip-chan’s cameras, it was extremely hard to make out the writing, and if anyone did attempt to read it, they claimed that the Korean made no sense. It was garbled, confusing, not natural. Some posters wondered if she was really Korean, as those who knew Korean claimed that the way she wrote was just not the way a natural born Korean would write things.
Her first large poster’s (pictured) closest translation was something along the lines of, “You can’t make the person unconscious only 7pm to 10pm.” Some pointed out that the characters “경정P” either didn’t mean anything, or was some sort of name. Again, since the quality of her cameras are extremely low, it’s near impossible to make out her writing. Other translations that were given of the other signs:
“don’t get tricked/don’t be fooled.”“Early every morning”“If someone comes that will paralyze (the person)”“I can’t be stopped.”
One poster with Korean friends stated that they thought the signs were perhaps a warning to those looking in. Either that or some sort of cry for help. The friends also noted that again, the Korean in these signs was not natural, and in fact written with very bad grammar.
Chip-chan put up a new sign shortly after (pictured), but there has yet to be any sort of translation made to it. Those who watch her cams believe she wanted the viewers to pay attention to the new sign, as she continually returned to it to rewrite it throughout the first night.
Many of those in the thread continually came to the conclusion that she must be schizophrenic, as she displayed certain symptoms, such as being able to sleep in very peculiar positions for so long. While it’s not completely out of the question, it’s not considered fact either.
It was soon discovered through some blogs run by her that Chip-chan has been filming herself since 2008. But, reading more of her writing, the cameras that are there were not set up by her. They were set up by someone else, but she keeps them on her to keep track of what happens when she sleeps. It’s still not clear why.
From her blogs, it appears that she suffers from paranoia. Again, whether it has a foundation or not is still up in the air.
So far, reading her broken English as well as poor translations from Korean, Chip-chan believes that in 1999, she was captured by a corrupt police officer who somehow rendered her unconscious. He then proceeded to implant a verichip into the cartilage in her ankle. With this chip, he is apparently able to see and hear everything she does, as well as control her sleeping and keep her from leaving (to seek help). Chip-chan says she figured out in 2006 that something happened to her and that it was in connection with her awful sleeping patterns.
“I have slept for 20 hours everyday since then.” she writes. Again, in some of her writing she writes that she was not the one who set up the cameras, but she has kept them installed to watch what happens when she is asleep. There were originally 3, but as of today we can only locate 2.
After her webcams were installed, she “only sleep[s] 10 - 4 hours,” but her stalker makes her sleep all day. She also describes her body as feeling “pressed.” She writes that before all this happened, she used to sleep 4 hours regularly and would awaken without the aid of an alarm. Following the installation of the verichip and after the webcams, she claimed to have an alarm set to ring/flash every 10 minutes, but when asleep, she never responds to them. (As of today we have yet to see any evidence of an alarm being present). Lastly, Chip-chan claims to “fall into a fit of convulsions.”
She challenges those who stumble across her information to watch her as she sleeps, and to keep an eye out for an alarm that flashes every 10 minutes. She claims to “never listen or react to the alarm.”
