Neighbors moved out and their power is still on, so I decided to hook my shit up via extension cord.

Saw a car roll up today, "Geo-Tech engineering consultants" and since the cord went from their front yard and into mine (but not in plain site, over their own fence into their back yard then over into my back yard), I decided to pull out. The giant cord is still on their side of the fence, but I unhooked the rest of the cords and rolled them all back up and put them away (and left the giant one there, but not touching my property etc.). Was able to do that without the Geo-Tech guy seeing me.

About half hour later, someone who I'd assume to be the landlord knocked on my door, truck parked next door. I didn't answer ofc. I'll assume he called the cops. I was taking a nap when I hear my side gate being forced open (if you don't pull the pin, it drags and makes a big ass noise), didn't see the person (and didn't plan on going outside to see), but noticed a cop car parked directly across the street. No attempts to knock before or after they were in my back yard.

Not worried or anything since they can't prove it was my cord and there was nothing in my own back yard that could be any sort of evidence, but was just confused as to why the guy went in my back yard.

It's a house, not an apartment. The house next door is being rented so that's why there's a landlord there. That guy has 0 bearing on my house lol

If they suspect there might be a burglary or theft and no one answers the door, they can investigate the back yard to make sure everything is safe, they just can't enter the garage or house without probable cause. If this was completely illegal all someone would have to do that's running from the cops is hide in a back yard and so long as no one saw him cops couldn't try tracking him.

My guess is landlord saw cable going from his house to yours, called cops, cops checked your back yard to see if it was connected to something, saw that it wasn't, left, told landlord to stop being paranoid.

If the cord is out in the open in plain view of everyone then there's no reasonable expectation of privacy, REOP, so yes, they pretty much can if this is the case.

The only part of it that was in plain view was in the neighbor's front yard going into their own back yard. There was new viewable pieces at all in my yard since it went from their back yard to mine within a gap in the fence(6 ft wooden fence), didn't even go up over it. What I ended up doing when I saw the first car was unhooking everything on my side and stuffing the rest of the other piece through the gap and back into their yard lol
