Apparently Google will be releasing it's cloud storage service sometime next week. It looks like you'll be given an initial 5GB of storage, but the option to purchase more. I'd imagine that that size will eventually increase, similar to GMail.

Yay! I never had luck getting additional dropbox referrals (Could go the google ad route, but the thought of sharing my email with strangers is meh), so this is a nice second option.

I got the full space via Google Ads for 56 bucks.

Dropbox is dependent on Amazon for their price model, so if Google can manage to undercut even the Amazon S3 prices it may be able to disrupt Dropbox. Dropbox is a smaller team and much more focused though, it'll be interesting to see the software the Drive team produces and how it competes with Dropbox and similar services (Box, Skydrive, etc.).

I like the idea of linking one more thing to my google account, but at the same time; Dropbox works so well(and so many people use it) I dont see myself changing over even if its that great. Most of my teachers have dropbox and I can send them files(school work) all the time; it just feels like something google is getting into to late.

I'd probably need a batch file that auto-scrambles file-names and RARs them up with a randomized password before I'd consider using that. Google already knows enough about me by my surfing habits....

Pricing is kind of awesome, but the kicker is they make it up with duplication since they give themselves access to your data they can make up on duplicate data (e.g. music/video that is the same on many users accounts can simply be a reference to the same single file in their storage)



SkyDrive was already released this weekend which is a pretty identical product, 7 GB starting but if you've had a SkyDrive account in the past you can upgrade it to the old 25 GB limit for free.

What I was saying is that Google doesn't have to store the 'music' 1,000 times for 1,000 different users, they are simply going to store the music one time and share it among the users, so what would be 1 GB of storage for Google is now just 1MB. It still requires 1 MB of storage on each users account though, so they are 'making up' for this extra space they can give with this duplication fallback, see? As a result, you also lose all rights to the content once you upload it to Drive so it's not exactly a 'secure' way to store anything but it's great for the average user who doesn't care about the rights of their content.

SkyDrive wins for now, Dropbox second for security and Drive wins for initial storage but limited rights. You can get Box and 50 GB with promo codes but I don't know exactly how and I'm not sure they have a desktop client.

I've stored my entire music library there and there is even a way to retrieve it all should my hard drive fail. Pretty sick. I think the limit is something like 20,000 songs and my library is huge (91 GB) and it's only 13,000 songs.

You can upload 20,000 songs with google music for free, why would you put music on google drive?

Edit: beaten. Another good thing about google music is irrelevant file sizes. A 30 minute audiobook chapter that's 30-40mb still counts as one song. I have about 10 audiobooks on mine.

As far as syncing solutions go theverge.com (led by 'that dude' who was the face of Engadget) did a very comprehensive comparison and SkyDrive definitely comes out on top. SkyDrive has higher default limits(7GB or 25 GB), cheaper storage tiers and a cool feature called 'remote fetch' which will let you grab a file from your computer that isn't in your SkyDrive folder for those times you forget something.

I remember them mentioning it was a 'beta' when I got in and uploaded all my music. They may charge for the service in the future but hopefully they will not. I imagine the majority of people do not add anything new to their 'stored' music collection so there is little to no storage cost associated with them.

There really is no catch to the service usability at the moment though, you upload your library and you can listen to it online. There is a client which will upload your library and any new songs you add to your library automatically.

Is there any DMCA reporting/takedown functionality to be concerned with in Google Music? I don't know how it works or if anything is even public but it would seem crazy to be able to just upload all the pirated shit ever and have no concern.
