Internet speed (FiOS)

Although we have FiOS 35/35 pack, our internet speed test shows that we're receiving much less wirelessly. Note that the following is the better half of the speeds I've seen recently, recently speeds were jumping between 9-12mbs.

Using my old man's laptop, I found 43/36 (idr upload, but download is pretty accurate) while wired. His laptop receives 16/16 wirelessly. My speeds are what the picture displays.

I've done a bit of research today and tried a few solutions, but these "solutions" actually led to diminished d/u speeds.
- Verison's official FiOS optimizer
- Resetting the router
- Turning the router on/off
- OpenDNS
- GoogleDNS
- TCP Optimizer

The only option I have not tried was buying a 802.11n router, which people claim allowed for 42/42 speeds wirelessly. However, I don't want to buy that if there are free alternatives or inherent limitations. My wireless card is Realtek Wireless LAN 802.11n COMBO PCI-E NIC.

Any alternatives to buying a Wireless-N router?

Wish my area had internet even as good as your half effective stuff! Max I can get is AT&T UVerse 15/5

and I rarely ever get that even wired.

Considering your download is 35~46 mbps and wireless G's max theoretical throughput is 54mbps, it's incredibly close to being maxed out at the best possible conditions and being theoretical basically means you'll never reach it. Actual Wireless N maxes out at 600 mbps so you've got much more room to work with to actually achieve a connection that can accommodate what you're expecting for speeds.

Yeah, the speed is amazing; especially, since I upgraded from a 0.5mbs DSL speed.

@ This + Hey: The theoretical maximum is what I've read about. Would you guys recommend a refurbished router or is that like buying a used toothbrush?

It's usually more about the company and people's experience with their refurbs than being able to say y/n to them in general. If you can return it then at that price it's probably worth trying as long as anyone else needing to connect to it has an N-card or is willing to spend the money, too. Reviews seem to suggest that model might be a piece of shit without custom firmware, though. It isn't a difficult process but can seem daunting to newcomers.

The other laptop has a intel centrino wireless-n 1030, so I assume that laptop can run off the router. If the custom firmware is like tomato firmware, that shouldn't be an issue installing if they have instructions. Thanks.

Unless you're right next to the router, in a vacuum, you'll never get anywhere near the max speeds over wireless. Myself, I can get about 15 mbps over wireless G +/- 2 mbps depending on where i am.

Routers tend to last practically forever, so i'd guess it's probably fine to go with a refurb. And at only $15, it's not like you'd lose much if it goes bad. I don't have any experience with refurbished routers though.

So I've done a bit more research and am looking into a few more options before buying this router.

1. My current laptop cannot support 5GHz, so buying a dual band would not help at the moment; however, would buying the dual band be a good investment for the future?
2. Should I use custom firmware with my new router? Specifically, DD-WRT or Tomato.
3. Any response to the refurbished router question?

At your level of technical skill I would not attempt DD-WRT or Tomato.

Essentially if you don't know whether you should or not, you shouldn't.

I set up Tomato with my old router when I was on Verison's NQ DSL, so I can at least manage that (Never tried DD-WRT). Whether that will enhance my performance is in question though.

According to this thread, using Tomato firmware would allow OpenDNS access that is usually not available on the Verison network.

I suppose this is only semi-relevant, but back when I had 15/5 Fios I ended up randomly getting the following for a while until I found a fix (Verizon tech couldn't find it themselves, before I did some reading) Ended up changing the router channel to 11 (from default; 1) and I ended up getting about 23/4 for the rest of the time I had them, which was strangely more than I paid for.

There are many factors regarding the wireless speed issue. The first thing you should check is how much interference you have. Do you live in an environment (apartments, townhomes) where there are many wireless routers around you?

Try running this, to determine which channel you should be running:

Also, what wireless security protocol do you use? In my prior experience, WEP really slows down your wireless speed, switch to WPA2 if you can.

Small house with 3 wireless laptops and 1 connected Apple TV via ethernet. Between my computer and the router is one wall (Thin wall though; I can hear people's craps). Should only have one wireless router here unless the basement people have their own (I doubt they do). I switched to WPA2 now; thanks for that bit. I'll check out the site and change the channel accordingly.

Ok, so I changed to WPA2 and ended up locking myself out. I reset the router to get back internet, but I would like to know what I did or did not do to make that happen.

Edit: I also noticed that Channels 4-13 were cluster fucked, so I moved from those channels.
