Tools, Tools, Tools, and more Tools. Youre all Tools, but thats fine because we all love Tools.

    This thread is about Tools.

So it's a thread for men, and only the awesome menly men of mans.

    http://www.newwookiee.com/images/spg98_f_norm_door.gif http://www.rockymounttelegram.com/me...erhill_roy.jpg

Why? Because we dont have a tools thread, AND IT'S NEEDED

There are many types of tools, but only some are true tools (HARBOR FREIGHT YOU CAN SUCK IT), and we love real tools, whether theyre powered or old school.

I'm looking to completly revamp all of my shitty old tools (well theyre not really shitty since ive had them for freaking eons and they still work), but it's time for an update. Ive been hearing a lot lately that DeWalts suck now, but I never had problems with their good old stuff.

Drills/drivers, cordless or not, power saws (miters, chain circular and all the others), rachet sets, wrenches, weed whips (fuck you cords, GAS ONRY), toolboxes, hammers, rulers/sqaures, levels, pliers, presses, testers, grinders, bits, sockets, knifes, staplers, clamps, hoes, pickaxes, chisels, sanders, lights, etcetcetcetcetc.

What are your favorite brands? What tools/equip/acc. cant you live without? Why should I dare by a shitty IR drill, when Festool is so awesome? What does every good man and house hold need?

Bosch power sander was the best £70 I've ever spent. Buy 2 and you can race them!

DeWalt tools do suck these days. They still perform well, but will not last nor take much of a beating. We sell them at the hardware store I work at and they really do just feel as flimsy as the generic brand Chinese made ones we also sell.

On the drill/screwgun (18v) side of things I got really fond of Makita. Dewalts tend to last a little longer, but I love the weight and grip of a Makita. Did a lot of commercial installation which is 90% screws, so I got plenty of time on a lot of guns, and these were the two most solid brands overall. Edit: Apparently Dewalt is poop now.

The catch to Makitas is the durability issues, but it's close enough that I felt like having one shit out on me a little earlier was worth it to make the work so much easier. Plus, if you're not going to be using it extensively, it's a moot point.

Most important tool imo...is the tool belt itself. Don't short yourself and go cheap. Spend the extra cash to get something nice. I prefer leather personally. It's a bit weighty, but if you're doing anything that requires carrying a lot of heavy gear, you won't really notice it, nor will your belt break on you. I've had this one for about 7 years now.

Secondly, a great razor. Useful for g'damn near anything. It makes a difference having a nice blade. Been using this one for a while now. Super easy to swap blades and plenty of storage for fresh ones.

That being said, I've been trying for years to find a really good work knife. I beat the hell out of them at work, and I've yet to find one that last more than a month or so. Any suggestions?

rofl. Disregard what I said about them then. Haven't used one in oh say, 7-8years. Looks like they went down the shitter. Edit: What about Makita then? They go to shit too? Would make me a very sad panda since I spent years with those things.

SuperKnives. They were bought up by Gerber in the last few years, but being Gerber that's probably not a bad thing. Mine is several years old, and is still going strong. Flip open, locks open and closed.

I have one similar, though they have updated their changing mechanism. Use it all the time doing freight at work.

I've been thinking about putting a toolbox on my Ranger pickup in order to get all of the clutter of tools out of the cab. Anyone know of a good brand that is durable and wont leak, but doesn't cost and arm and a leg?

Dunno, I have a Gerber multi-tool and it sucks, barely been used and it's all rusty from a little bit (ok, a lot) of sweat in my pocket.

I do use a flip open utility knife though, they're so much better than the big bulky ones, even if you have to keep your spare blades elsewhere.

Our "high end" brand is Milwaukee, but Makita is still good too. Honestly, all the companies these days use a cheaper plastic on their tools than they used to.

Yup. They are one in the same company. DeWalt took a dive in quality the moment that buyout/merger happened. B&D is their homeowner tool line, with DeWalt being the "contractor" line. DeWalt isn't bad these days, but it is definitely not as top of the line anymore. They will still outlast a Sears Craftsman.

I have a razor that works fine for weaker materials like plastic, cardboard, etc. I need something that can handle wood, drywall, firewall, etc. There's just a lot of times when I need a precise enough cut that I can't just hammer a wedge into it, and a knife is more convenient than grabbing a skill-saw or sawzall. Smaller razors like that just bend and/or break. Not to mention they're dull as fuck after a day.

I need something with some density to the blade.

My mother works for Bosch Rexroth corporate and claims their stuff is miles above their competitors, thoughts on that?

I'm looking to build up a supply of woodworking tools soon to start making wooden arcade stick cases, but I don't really know what's good to make educated purchases at this point.

    Hell yeah great thread!

Personally I gear more toward automotive tools, I'm not a mechanic by trade but I do all my own work and am always building something. (Currently my 78 Trans Am).

You know what really grinds my gears? People that don't take care of their tools. I clean mine off every time I use them, and every tool has a spot that it's always in if I'm not using it at that moment. I go over to friends houses and have to spend ten minutes finding a damn screwdriver because everything is thrown into drawers together, and they're all coated in grease and sawdust and god-knows-what else. It drives me insane. I'm that anal guy that has socket rails, wrench racks, and lined toolbox drawers to keep everything in place.

For power tools I usually stick to Ryobi because they are so damn cheap and they work decently well. Under heavy regular loads they will last a decent amount of time but not the most durable. But for the home with light use they are amazing. And they are far less expensive than Bosch or Makita.

For other tools I have a craftsman socket set that is pretty good and craftsman screwdrivers they are on the cheaper end and relatively low durability but they have a great lifetime warranty. If you want super expensive you can get snapon or mac but prepare to spend the big bucks for them.

I also really like Klein tools for anything electric related.

And I cannot express enough how awesome impact drivers are if you do a lot of work with wood and screws get one!

Since I don't turn wrenches for a living, I use a lot of Craftsman hand tools (sockets, pliers, etc) and I've been very happy with them. I can't justify the cost of Mac or SnapOn for my usage, and the lifetime warranty is awesome. The Sears near me gives me zero crap about trading in anything that has ever broken. (Which to date, has only been because I wasn't using it for it's intended use). A lot of professional mechanics knock Craftsman, but for the average car guy, it's the best bang for the buck.
