The Witch - Horror Movie

New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. 'The Witch' is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey for an inescapable evil.


Seeing this tomorrow night - everyone is saying great things about this movie. Stephen King even saw it and thought it was great:

The Witch scared the hell out of me. And it's a real movie, tense and thought-provoking as well as visceral.

This movie definitely might not be for everyone. Trailer is misleading, and the movie is an incredibly slow burn. I think the point and the horror of the movie was the presentation of how delusional and crazy people were back then with their religious zeal. The movie was realistic, besides the ending (which was a very short segment of 'magic'). For me, it was thought provoking, different, and interesting. We had some discussion on the movie after with a few friends, but the majority didn't really like it.

Yeah went and saw it and I think most the audience kind of groaned at the end or asked is that it or wtf? A friend that had been waiting to see it for awhile said she had a similar experience. Had one person actually get up and leave 20-30 min in. I wouldn't say it's unwatchable... but I don't think it's worth it to see in the theaters and I don't see it staying in the theaters long.

I actually really dug this movie, however I literally knew nothing going in, hadn't even seen a trailer.

It was nice to see classical witch folklore on screen in in a very grounded story. This being marketed as a horror movie was a swing and a miss though and I can see why people would have been disappointed. A lot of the movie is just a well shot well acted period piece with witchcraft backed infighting manifesting throughout.

I think the point and the horror of the movie was the presentation of how delusional and crazy people were back then with their religious zeal.

I didn't get this at all, unsure how you did other than there was just a prominent showcase of religion and prayer throughout. If anything it showed that they weren't truly religious enough and that there was some power of god present. One of the first scenes is the girl confessing to "every sin" there is and her unbaptized brother being taken by a witch. She was one of many chinks in the family's religious armor. I think that Thomasin for the most part was a neutral link in the family and it's a story about her turning from god to the devil in the end becoming a witch. The entire family outside of her shows signs of sin from the start and throughout, and in the case of the father even proclaims their sin, his being Pride. Caleb would be lust, the twins would be sloth/disobedience and the mother would be envy/vanity.

The movie was realistic, besides the ending (which was a very short segment of 'magic').

Real talk that girls ass was makin me feel real lewd. I really enjoyed the final scene not only because it was aesthetic but because I was sittin there like CaptainAmericaIgetThat.gif recognizing Goya's witches flight painting.


All in all it made me want to live deliciously. Also as far as child actors go Caleb is def top tier.

Good points - we actually discussed how they portrayed the seven deadly sins throughout the movie. It was definitely a relief to see a decent child actor - most of the ones I've seen have been annoying as hell *cough* kid from babadook *cough*
