An app to extract a scene of my picking from a movie source? (mp4, mkv, etc)

Does anyone know if there's an app that'll let me extract parts of a video out of my picking (manually via clicking or via a specified time slot)?

I thought VLC player was doing the trick with its record option, but the mp4s I was letting it record came out very stuttery.

I use vdub for most of my "video cropping" (and resizing and also cropping the area I want to see only also)since it can make pretty awesome animated gifs, I use it alot.

only problem is, it doesn't like mp4 and mkv it uses mostly avi and mpg, quick solution is to use fraps -> record "about" where I want, load into vdub, and select specifically where I want the crop and done.

Example NSFW gif I recently made using Vdub only

(entire process to make the above gif was about 15-20 seconds)

I would of recommended something like sony vegas, but I haven't had much luck with its "video cropping" per say...

    Ah nice, thanks for that.

I didn't know Fraps can record mkv/mp4. I always thought, like pushing Print Screen, whatever you attempt to capture would only show as a black screen.

I don't mind having to do that. It's only a slighly extra step. I'll go grab vdub and then a fraps trial to test!

If you're saying what I think, freemake video converter allows you to crop video and then save the slice of video in whatever format you want. MP4 and MKV included.

Fraps works on everything with a video overlay!
I use mplayer classic myself (not sure what all you use to watch videos), and it renders ever video type as fraps recordable vob, mkv, mp4, avi, flv, rmvb, dat etc

Ok just to clarify then (I've not had time to mess around yet, been a busy weekend):

Caiyuo: I suppose ultimately I want to say, extract a scene off one of my videos from say, 07:20 to 08:12 and then save it as something for youtube use or music video/movie usage. When people tell me video cropping it would be what Gulkeeva showed in his vdub screenshot (where he actually cropped something down and also ripped a scene of something; as he said, to make gifs): so, cropping = resizing to me, rather than extracting. Does that make sense?

I had a look at the Freemake Video Convertor and seeing only just 1 screenshot I am doubting the ability for it to crop, but I guess it's hidden somewhere. Going to see if I can install it on my work PC to just fiddle around.

EDIT: Installed it and found a tutorial in it, seems like a video must be loaded first! http://www.freemake.com/how_to/how_to_cut_video_quickly

Gulkeeva: I use MPC too. Do I need to tweak any setting to allow it to be Fraps recordable? I've only used the out of the box settings so far. (Will try to try to tonight if I am not staying late at work)

Vdub can do exactly what you want. Just select the time range, select direct stream copy under Video, then save as avi.

I used the CCC's mplayer, didn't change a thing on it, and works just fine.
And yes Vdub not only can crop a section section of play time out of a video, it can crop the area of display area on a video.

For instance if, I wanted in the picture above I posted, I can "crop off" the chat at the bottom left and the UI at the bottom also. Vdub does it nice and quick.

Great for making those youtube short videos, when you want to hide some stuff, and only show a segment of something!
