This morning, Game Informer released their new cover for the July issue of their magazine. Apparently, the next Gears of War game is being announced within it’s pages. While we can only speculate about who is in the shackles and where they are, Gears of War is going to receive a lot of new life here in the upcoming months! On Monday, Game Informer is releasing a teaser trailer, jammed with sneak peeks! We’ll be sure to keep the Gears of War Community updated with all the latest news!

“Usually, we like to reveal the name and final cover art for our upcoming issue’s cover story the Thursday before it hits subscribers. This time we’re saving the full unveiling of the game’s title until Monday during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, but we can confirm that our next cover is the new installment in the Gears of War series and is coming to Xbox 360. We figure this news and a glimpse of the shrouded Gears of War cover are least some consolation, as the image raises some interesting questions: Who is in chains, and where?

Going to be officially announced Monday. One could assume that's Marcus in chains so it's probably based during Pen wars/very soon after eday

Not sure I'm gonna pick this up. I got hit with the Gears 3 profile glitch, which I don't think ever got fixed, on top of feeling like Gears 3 really brought nothing new to the table other than hammering out the controls a bit more.

While the four player co-op was awesome in Gears 3, it didn't cover up the rest of problems I had with that game. Definitely going to be passing on this one.

Eh, I loved Gears 3. Probably my favorite console game of this generation. Day 1 for me unless its a kinect title.

People Can Fly "involved" in Gears of War

Yesterday, I speculated that the next Gears of War, the one semi-revealed by the folks at Game Informer magazine, will be developed by the talented crew at People Can Fly who made the very good early 2011 first-person shooter Bulletstorm. I even teased People Can Fly creative director Adrian Chmielarz about it over Twitter. He didn't reply.

But, this morning, Mike Capps, president of Gears studio Epic Games (which owns People Can Fly) did his best Daniel Bryan impression and weighed in in the affirmative. Looks like they're "involved", and it's not a leap to assume they'll be doing more than helping out here or there. Very cool, but it makes you wonder... first-person Gears of War?

Yea, I assume it's a prequel. Based on the cover image, it probably takes place during the Pendulum Wars and ends with Marcus going to prison (assuming thats Marcus on the cover, which I think it is since you can sorta see his do-rag).

EDIT: Hm, maybe not during the Pendulum Wars since you can see Reavers flying around blowing shit up in the image.

Update: The new installment in Epic's billion-dollar franchise is Gears of War: Judgment. The July cover of Game Informer shows series mainstay Damon Baird shackled as the Locust hordes rage around him. Augustus "Cole Train" Cole, soldier and world-famous Thrashball player, dons our second cover image in the same precarious situation.

Little snippets of details are periodically leaking out for Gears of War: Judgement and as we’ve told you in previous posts, the game is expected to be shown of during Microsoft’s E3 Press Conference. Whether or not it will just be a reveal trailer or gameplay is unknown. The game has been in development for a while though as People Can Fly dropped the Bulletstorm sequel they were working on quite awhile ago.

Baird will be the main playable character a long with Cole as the second lead. New characters Garron Paduk and a red-haired girl named Sophia Hendricks will be introduced, continuing the series 4 player co-op addition. Yesterday we suspected that the game was possibly a prequel, taking place shortly after E-Day, but it seems, as suspected that we were wrong. As of right now, all we know is that the game is a spin-off and not a true sequel or prequel. The game will focus on Baird in his earlier years, and has apparently been accused of military crimes. The same could be said for Cole as well. From what we can tell from the images released, neither Baird or Cole have their war scars yet. Hopefully we’ll know when the game takes place soon so we can set all speculation aside.

Karen Traviss is also no longer acquainted with the Gears of War Franchise, so someone new is at the helm for the story this time around.

Lastly, a new mode named “Overrun” may be in the works. This mode is said to be a mix of Horde and Beast Mode.

I've just finished playing Overrun, the new multiplayer mode in Epic and People Can Fly's Gears of War: Judgment. As a fan of both Gears of War 3's enhanced horde mode and vicious Beast Mode, Overrun gives me exactly what I've been hoping for: Namely, a versus mode that lets players alternate between playing as defending COG soldiers and the attacking Horde.

From what I saw and played, it's a hell of a lot of fun.

At a Microsoft event at E3, I played both sides of a match of Overrun. (The image up top is from Gears 3's Beast Mode). Overrun will feature 5-on-5 versus multiplayer, with a variety of objectives. The map I played featured the defending team trying to keep a the Locust forces from destroying a generator.

In a cool wrinkle, Overrun mode will have class-based gameplay. I played as a scout, which armed me with a sniper rifle and let me climb up to ledges to have a better vantage point. Another cool touch is that each class is a unique character from the story. The scout is a guy named Paduk, who I'm assuming is a new character in Judgment.

The other classes are: Baird is an engineer, which lets him build turrets and fortifications like in Gears 3's horde mode. Cole is a soldier, which lets him toss ammo crates, presumably for the other soldiers to use. Sofia is the medic, which the ability to heal other players; I didn't see the medic abilities in action.

The classes do change up the feel of the gameplay, though I only had a chance to really try out the scout a bit.

On the horde side, things work much like they do in Beast mode. You start out with lowly locust troops, then unlock better and better characters as you do better. There's a time limit like in Beast Mode as well, which keeps you constantly on the offensive.

The Berserker isn't in the game—a Microsoft representative told me that it presented too many balance issues, which makes sense. Corpsers were already pretty powerful, and in my time as Horde we wound up having a bit of a corpser party on the other team.

Overrun looks like a significant evolution for Gears' already supremely fun multiplayer. It's the versus mode that I've been hoping for since Horde mode debuted in Gears of War 2, and I'm really looking forward to getting to spend some more time with it.
