    Chromebook Thread

(Please merge if there is an existing thread, although advance search didn't come up with chromebook.)

    Hello BG-Tech!

    Spoiler: show
http://www.samsung.com/us/images/mar...quee_CUT-1.jpgI held it at a Best Buy this past week, and it's so goddamn light.

Is a ChromeBook right for me?

Been thinking of dropping a few bucks on a Chromebook these past couple of weeks. BG do you own a chromebook? What are your experiences with it so far? I want to get a dialogue going here to see what options are available for Googles OS in terms accessing data on other computers (work, home, etc.), what steps to take in order to make all my information available to me remotely. More can be said, but I'll start off with this.

I'm aware of the OS's online-centric nature, so let's skip the back and forth of what it lacks locally, and discuss more of what it does bring on a grander scheme.

    Spoiler: show
I'm just starting to research the general benefits right now, and I think I can do with running on WiFi off my phones hotspot. I will probably mostly be utilizing this for work outside the office, when needed. I can probably use a mix of online storage and remote access to my current available networks in order to make the best of getting all my information at my fingertips.

eh, I bought one for my wife, but I haven't really played around with it. She's had zero problems with anything she's tried to do and seems to love it for what that's worth.

They come with 100gb of google drive space, so you have a lot of "cloud" space.

Hey so I have a Google Hangout interview tomorrow for a temp Google product support position, and I've been assigned to talk about Chromebooks. I'm currently doing a little research on the offerings/prices/specs now and tonight, but I'd be eager to hear more here about who has one or is close with someone with one and what those people like about them.

With the exception of the $199 Acer model, it seems like they all have SSDs and boast that quick bootup time pretty hard -- that and the cloud storage/Google Drive. I put an SSD in my desktop I built in 2010; I guess I can mention how I've seen the value in the faster load times similarly? Dunno. That higher tier Chromebook Pixel looks pretty sharp too.. but definitely pretty pricey.

The one I bought was the $250 samsung one. Has a 16 GB eMMC, whatever that is. Flash card of some type. It pretty much boots up and shuts down instantly though.

This one if you're curious. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...rds=chromebook

Battery life seems awesome and there are no fans or anything so it's totally silent.

If you want to know what using one is like, it's basically like using the chrome browser with apps from the chrome store. Basically anything here works on it and that's what you use for apps. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/home
