Guantanamo steps up force-feeding – inmate

Could have sworn there was another thread for this but can't seem to find it so here is another one.

I don't know if anyone has been keeping up with the situation that has been happening in Guantanamo, but it has been utterly disgusting how the government is handling the situation down there.

How the hell can the world governments claim that what the U.S. does to the detainees is still within the realm of human treatment despite some of there heinous crimes?

The brutality of tactics used to force-feed inmates at the Guantanamo Bay prison is escalating, according to the last British citizen being held at the camp. He says that metal-tipped feeding tubes are causing already-starving inmates to vomit.

46-year-old Shaker Aamer, from London, has been held at Guantanamo Bay prison without charge or trial for over 11 years. He confirmed to the Guardian newspaper that prison authorities are intensifying their efforts to try and break strikers by introducing new equipment.

One detainee was admitted to hospital around 10 days ago after having the feeding tube pushed into his lungs rather than his stomach.

“The administration is getting ever more angry and doing everything they can to break our hunger strike. Honestly, I wish I was dead,” Aamer said from the camp. The speech was recorded the previous week, but was published on Saturday after the newspaper received the recording.

He also alleged that nurses at the prison are discarding their name tags prior to entering the camp so as not to be identified by prisoners, who could potentially file complaints against them.

Anne Richardson, a lawyer for one of the striking detainees, told RT at the beginning of June that “they have made conditions at times freezing cold for them in the cells,” saying that her client was now “skin and bones.” She described their having to choose between hygiene and sleep, as showers were sometimes scheduled in the middle of the night.

“These gruesome new details show just how bad things are in Guantanamo. The whole thing is at breaking point. Clearly the US military is under enormous pressure and doing everything it can to hurt the men and break the hunger strike,” UK attorney Clive Stafford Smith told the Observer on Saturday.

104 inmates are currently hunger-striking, with 44 being subjected to force-feeding. Shaker Aamer has been cleared for release twice since 2007.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama discussed his internment during the G8 Summit. Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt confirmed on Tuesday that the UK “continues to make clear to the US that we want Mr. Aamer released”.

Amnesty International said on Friday that the UK must continue to apply pressure to “resolve the detention of Shaker Aamer and all other detainees held without charge or trial at Guantanamo Bay, consistent with the USA’s international human rights obligations.”

The human rights organization urged the resolution of the situation and the prioritization of human rights. “Now that Cameron has said he will write to Obama there must be no further delays. Now it is time to take action.” Amnesty International said.
Is this what Americans who defy the government look forward to in the near future? (Speculation, but we all know where its leading at this rate.)

If they aren't from America, they aren't really people. Come on, everyone knows this.

Guess I need to specify for those with a bit less critical thinking skills. I should have been a bit more clear when I insinuated that Americans should be worried due to the path that our government is heading down. Of course everyone should be worried and no way implied only Americans, but I mention them specifically because they should be the ones acting to correct their government's illegal activities. A realistic concern considering a person can be tried as a potential terrorist and never seen again without needing an explanation.

Who cares, really. They're criminals. And like said above not American, so do they really count? It's their own fault for hunger striking.

Great in theory, but its scary when I think about how many people have been successfully scared into thinking that anybody accused of being a terrorist is a terrorist. With 10+ years of having "news" networks talk about the terrorism, do you really think there are enough people out there that could change it? I'll admit I'm cynical, but years ago I stopped having faith in the general populace of America.

Admittedly I think the general populace in America have already become far to complacent, it would take something extraordinary to spur any sort of action.

Not sure if trolling, but in case not.

The entire point of US law, from Innocent until Proven Guilty to Double Jeopardy to Cruel and Unusual Punishment to etc, etc is that we'd rather have a system that accidentally treats a murderer like king than accidentally treat an innocent like dirt .... that we'd rather accidentally let 10 terrorists walk free than accidentally incarcerate one innocent civilian. The entire point of every level of our judicial and punishment system (in theory ... with some variance due to state laws) is that no facility or treatment therein should be so low a standard that if someone were to be accidentally imprisoned, that the provided lifestyle is at least mildly to moderately comfortable and livable. And while it SUCKS to have to think about all the horrible people we treat better than (and waste shit tons of money on) we treat our average homeless man those arguments should be silenced every time we exonerate an innocent person.

Thus for ANY prison ... from Guantanamo to whatever one is nearest to you ... you have to ask yourself if that place would be acceptable for even yourself to be placed in at this exact moment (regardless of guilt)
