    Mobile Authenticator

Was hoping to get some impressions from anyone that happens to use SE's Mobile Authenticator app for android. I've got one of the little push button authenticators personally, but have a friend wondering if they should get the same, or if the mobile app is reliable.

    Any input much appreciated.

I use the mobile app on my android. It's great and I've never had any issues with it. In my opinion, it is much better than remembering to carry around or find the original authenticator to log into stuff. Plus, it's free.

I've had an authenticator since XI and am a bit worried about how long the battery will last.

Anyone know how to switch from my old version to the android app?

    Thanks!

Have to do it on the Square Enix account management site. You will need to remove your token and add the software. Just remember to remove the software from your old phone if/when you switch.

I am using the iOS version and it's been good so far. Easy and free.

Batteries on the RSA tokens last for about 5 years, depending on use. These game ones will probably last a bit longer, since the display is only triggered when the button is pressed.

Then you contact SE support and have them disable it. Got mine off my account pretty painlessly when the battery died on it.

    This, nothing to add.

What do you have to provide for them to disable it? Just curious, thanks!

They'll have to swap the token on their database, and they probably have no automated process to handle that. Most companies that use physical tokens do not have an automated process since they have to pull the serials codes out of their pool and add it to a specified account.

Good info here, thanks all. One concern - a post on the app page for Android (Google Market) says the app reset completely for one user, which forced them to reactivate it. Since they didn't have the one-time password (because the app malfunctioned), they couldn't do it. A call to SE fixed the problem.

    Anyone else had that happen?

I use the Mobile Authenticator on my Android Tablet. A few items to note: If you were using a key dongle before, and it still works, you will not be able to use it again for another account if you remove it ( according to the site, I haven't personally tried it ). They throw warnings at you during the removal process of the old dongle for the MA. When you add a key dongle or authenticator to the account, like every other account I use a dongle for they give you an emergency unlock code. So while everyone here have had good luck with SE Support, I would just write down the unlock code and keep it in a safe place. Unlike the Google authenticator which gives you 8-10 ( I forget, don't use Google anymore ) codes for emergency unlock, SE gives you just one.

Works fine. I just hate having to enter it all the time (I'm really fucking lazy)

Yea. I did like the Battle.Net version that let you 'save' your computer for 30 days. Maybe SE will add something like this in a future patch.

I've also had an authenticator since FFXI which I "revived" for FFXIV. The batteries seem fine, but does anyone know if these have a low battery warning?
If not I will switch to the mobile app asap!

If they're like any of the RSA tokens i've used over the years, it will just die without any warning.
Average lifetime is about 3-5 years, not sure if the SE ones last longer since they're not displaying the code 24/7, but those displays are so low power I doubt it matters.

I don't see any possible way it could have a low battery indicator.

    Edit: Beaten

Downloaded app yesterday just because, it takes about 2minutes to set it all up and works fine. Only problem is having to sign into my phone to click it to get my number, but that's not a huge hassle. And compared to having to search around my desk to find the fucking token thing like I did all the time on WoW, the app is much better lol

It really is much more convenient than the dongle, if you're logging in remotely to say your SE account or w/e. I wouldn't like having an extra thing on my keychain to carry around other than my keys and bottle opener.
