Phase one of having the greatest US president ever is coming to fruition.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker has told Democratic Party county chairs that he is considering a run for governor in 2013, according to the New York Observer’s Politicker NJ.

Booker and his political consultant Mark Matzen have been taking meetings and have suggested that the mayor will make a decision on the run by December.

If he decides to run, he’ll likely face incumbent Gov. Chris Christie in 2013.
Christie, a rising star in the GOP, is slated to give a keynote address at the Republican National Convention next week.

For his part, Booker has also gained a level of popularity in the Democratic Party, driven by his engagement on Twitter and his frequent media appearances.
But he’s also had some troubles of late, getting castigated in the press back in May for criticizing the President Barack Obama’s campaign for attacking Bain Capital, even as he as an Obama surrogate.

In May, Booker and Christie worked together on a parody skit video in which they poked fun at each other’s reputations, simultaneously underscoring their rivalry and the good relationship between them.

As of May 8 this year, it was at 56% and climbing, with a 33% disapproval rate in NJ (last year in May, it was an even 44% split). I know of exceptionally few Republicans outside of the state who have anything bad to say about him, and most independents and Republicans that I speak to from NJ love the guy. Another NJ poll, from April this year had Christie with a 90+% approval from Republicans, 64% among independents. Even 29% of Democrats in NJ have a favorable view of Christie. That seems like an awfully hard battle to fight... but I think both Democrats and Republicans want it. The Democrats would love to see Christie lose; Republicans would love to see him win a hard-fought fight before a 2016 presidential bid if Romney loses this year. But however fiercely he's hated by the folks who hate him, I don't see any data anywhere that suggests anything like a 10% approval within NJ itself.
