On this day five years ago humanity received a grim reminder. We lived in fear of the primals and were disgraced to craft in the hamlet battles we called content.

Anyways, it's been a year now since the finale of 1.0 and I thought we could use a thread to remember the good ole days / shit on SE for not changing a thing / be amazed at how far the game is come / your surplus sentinel rank hits 5 / when the fuck is 2.1

I miss my 3-5 seconds of constant server lag!

More seriously. My wife who didn't play 1.0 doesn't see anything that special about the opening video/end of an era trailer. I wonder if that's common amongst fresh 2.0 players? Cos I know I was all omg when I saw it at shutdown and even now I really like the extended opening video. Obviously playing through 1.0 storyline helped...

Also, I wish we could access old storyline CS'es from the Inn. They told us at shutdown we would be able to but some might be changed slightly but as far as I can see, you can't.

Double also, they need to add in a fight with Nael in 2.0. Even if it's a flashback type of thing.

Can't speak for the entirety of 2.0-players, but for me it's the opposite. In one of the first few beta tests where the opening was shown, I wasn't quite content with how the game felt yet. I logged out and watched the opening again and kind of felt that not playing would be a waste, though I can't quite put my finger on why I thought that. Probably something about the video having an incredible atmosphere; Louisoix smiling as he's blown away is also somewhere in the direct vicinity manly tears.

That and, later, the 2.0-storyline really made me wish I had at least gone through the original storyline so my character could have experienced everything.

Could have seen more of Gaius, too.

Still laughing about the fact people who used to play 1.0 justified it by saying they'll "get ahead in 2.0".

What a surprise it must have been that SE didn't spend 3 years cultivating the endgame sandbox for these pretty little snowflakes. You got nothing to do? Who would've seen that coming!

It is scary how far this game has come since the initial 1.0 release and the gigantic heap of shit it was. I was really dubious about coming back but the "We are ending the game cinematic" really was impressive to me, it showed that they knew their game was shit, but look at what we want to do to try and start again, took a lot of guts to restart and I think that’s why a lot of people I know gave it a second chance.

A lot of people in my Free Company never played 1.0 so when they ask and we just say "it was awful, it really was" a lot of them just think we are over exaggerating. My wtf is this moment from 1.0 was the emote quest in Gridania on initial release, no one knew what to do, the hints the NPC gave you had no reference to the emote you needed to do in game, and it was just a cluster fuck of people spamming emotes to see which one was right. I am 100% convinced they added so many emote quests in 2.0 because of this to show they could actually do it.

I miss one thing from 1.0 DoH levequests giving you the materials for completion, but happily take the +200% for HQ over it any day.

Honestly, whilst at release 1.0 was terrible, by the later stages it wasn't that bad. It's just it had burned too many people already.

Not sure the exact turning point but I picked it back up at around 1.17/1.18 iirc and enjoyed it from that point onwards. There were a few gripes but it certainly wasn't anywhere near as bad as what people say imo. Server latency, drop rates and bad job balancing were probably my biggest gripes at that point.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Don't worry. According to people on the OF, that lag didn't exist and SE fixing it by doing things like adding zones was really because of ps3 limitations. (omgIgottastopreadingtheOF)

I don't think anyone ever did figure out what the hell the "surplus" notifications were for. It just looked like a way for the game to say "hah, fuck you, you've lost so much exp to fatigue that you've missed out on entire levels of exp!"

Sentinel rank was your "shield skill", basically. I don't remember if it served a purpose. Rampart and shit might've originally been tied to your Sentinel "class"; I forget. That didn't last too long.

If you didn't play FFXI, skills (Sword, Shield, Weavering, Parry, Block, Evasion etc) went up by using them. Randomly. This was something done sort of alongside leveling.

Early XIV, leveling was basically skill-ups. Sentinel was a side "class" just for wearing a shield, and shield skills used to be tied to it.

There was also no way to see your sentinel exp other than lodestone. lol

Surplus was also the buzzword for fatigue. "Your surplus x increases" means "lol your exp getting nerfed son"

OT: I sort of wish I stayed for the completion of the storyline (stopped around the time of Jobs), but I wouldn't have had anyone to do it with so meh.

Gladiator had it bad under that system too. You were capped at earning 500 total skill points in a single battle, which meant every class leveled up faster than Gladiator since, if you blocked and earned shield skill points, it limited how fast your sword skill, which determined your Gladiator level, could rise.

It was a really awful fucking system.

Because everyone enjoyed skilling up SO much in XI they decided it should be the primary way to level!

Still disappointed I never got to do the end-times story, but none of my old crew were still on-board at that point (except for one guy maybe?).

Server issues and whatnot aside I kind of miss the flow combat had when they fixed it up. Feels like they wanted to speed it up in ARR, but awkwardly stopped halfway.

Anyone miss spending half an hour or more checking 100s of bazaars in the market wards looking for a specific item? (For new 2.0 players, these are not players but retainers. Oceans of retainers. There was no search function or market board.)

They did at least eventually add that though! So then you just had everyone stacking up at the entrance to the markets to search instead.
