Your ISP is a cock gobbler (why we dont have gigabit speeds)

    http://arstechnica.com/information-t...abit-internet/

Not really that big of news, since most people already know this. Having lived in upstate NY where Time Warner was THE ONLY source of internet/cable/phone, it was mind numbing having to deal with their service and support, yet Verizon would never come up further north, and I would guess it was probably some deal between the two, much like the deals in place between Price Chopper/Wegmanns in NY.

Monopoly is only a board game!

Time Warner Cable said entry-level pricing for broadband was the second lowest in the world. "Competition is robust and growing, with American consumers enjoying meaningful choices among providers, speeds and pricing. The US broadband network is strong and is only getting stronger."
From the article you linked on BBC. What a load of horseshit, there are no choices in tons of areas. I would say choices are only available in very populated cities and areas of immense income. Anywhere else and you're only choice is 1 provider.

In terms of practicality as well, if you actually want high-speed broadband there isn't a whole lot of choice either way. I technically can get U-Verse instead of Comcast if I wanted, but their max speed is like half of my current package.

Douglas said Comcast's current speeds already satisfy customer demand. Only 34 percent of Comcast residential customers choose a speed tier faster than 25Mbps, he said.
The 505Mbps down and 100Mbps up service is available in some markets for $399.95 a month, nearly six times the price of Google Fiber.
Wow, shocking. I can't believe people don't want 500 mbps enough to pay $400/mo for it!

I'd like to know what people is doing where a 20 Mb downstream is not enough, or just people wanting to stream in 4K their shitty game sessions (that would require a proper upstream I recon)?

How about opening random image thread? That shit takes forever. It maxes out my connection at 36 mbps for at least 10-20 seconds usually, unless everything is already cached. And because it's all images that change the length of the page as they load, i can't even start looking at them until everything is loaded.

Downloading a tv show takes me about 5 minutes. Would be nice to start watching it without such a big delay. And then 20+ gb games? Haha, i hope you aren't planning on playing that today.

This. Even with Comcast internet it takes forever to download and fully patch a new game, whether it's on PSN, Steam, Etc. And if you toss in more devices, it slows it down even more.

It's not so much that Comcast, or TimeWarner, or whichever other company, sucks with their service. If anyone who knows, or who's experienced any of these companies extensively, is that their customer service fucking blows. Furthermore, exacerbating the problem is that their services are touch and go based on Location. I've had the Pleasure of experiencing Comcast in 4 different locations across South Florida. Twice their connection blew chunks sub 5mb/~1 D/U if when it could connect, the other times, straight up +25/-5 D/U.

If there is an issue with your connection in your area, pray to lord jesus almighty that it's a problem with YOUR connection and not your neighborhood/area. They have little to no incentive to invest in fixing your shit problems in your shit area. We would get a lot of "There seems to be an outage in your area" bullshit excuse for 3 weeks running.

It's all about Incentive, if they have none, they aren't obligated to do shit. Morality goes out the fucking window when its up against Profits.

We have a choice, here. You can take Charter or you can take HBC. I prefer HBC because they're smaller, infrastructure is newer, and generally better at customer service, but it's really a case of lesser-of-two-evils. My speeds are still not great.

Usually the upstream is more of an issue for me, but to get decent up you generally need to to buy a package with good down.

Oddly, and I know I'm about the only person ever, but outside of Comcast's automated system usually not recognizing inputs from my phone when I try to plug in my CC info to pay my bill and them trying to funnel me to a CSR to charge me an extra $5 to pay my bill, I've had stellar customer service from them in the 10+ years I've used their service.

I have a "choice" of satellite for 140/month that has shit bandwidth caps/throttling, Frontier(local phone company under the CenturyLink umbrella) DSL for 50/m for their ULTRAMAX speed of 1/1 u/d with shit reliability and Indian techs, and local wireless that sells 5/2 for 75/m no cap/throttling that cares enough to expand despite Frontier's attempts to quash any threat to their last-mile monopoly.

    Sure, I have "options".

I have to use Frontier. I get 1MB down, .15MB up. I have to call them every eight days or so to let them know their shitty internet isn't working. When they finally decide to send a tech out I'll get told they'll be here sometime between 7am and 5pm on a day not of my choosing, so if I have to work I end up having to call in. I'm sure you know what happens next.
    Spoiler: show
    They don't show up.

It infuriates me to the point where I'd rather just not have internet access anymore.

Meresgi lol that clip is what I thought of instantly.

I have AT&T and don't have any problems other than the fact that it's not fios or google fiber. First world problems, blah blah...I could stream some seriously nice shit. ( . _ . )

An aside: Originally I thought the title was 'Your ISP is a cock gobbler (why we dont have nice things)' because the way it was cut off from the New Post.

Companies have to run the lines separate from each other. Cable companies cant just take over the lines like they do at your house. So they have to invest the time and money to bring the service in. Example; AT&T has phone lines run to most house and has the plant line too, so Time Warner cant go to the phone taps and take over.

Don't most of these places actually make a profit due to kickbacks from laying cable as they are considered a fundamental core? Not 100% on that. I do know most of where I lived was wired up for Verizon to be able to come in, but they wouldn't and still have not after 4 years.

It costs the companies a lot of money to install or adjust these lines. Working for a construction company in NYC, if we put a catch basin on a corner per city directive and there are Con Ed, Verizon, Time Warner, Cablevision, National Grid, etc. lines in the way we charge the company to move them. There are, of course agreements, in place between the GC and the utility company so you can't charge them anything that comes to mind, but with the amount of work done in NYC they are surely paying a fair amount.

I cannot comment on any kind of tax breaks or anything the utility companies receive, however.

Now on the subject of speeds, while it would be awesome the have faster speeds the overall demand isn't quite there yet. Hell 50 mbps is more than enough for baby mammas watching netflix on the Wii.
