Why did it end up like this?

I'm trying to figure it out. My guess is, so far in the red from the 1.0 tragedy that they had to make a people pleaser to make money. I played first beta in 1.0 beta land clear through launch and up until the end, then 2.0 beta through launch up until october. I invested a great deal of time and money into the game. 4 legacy accounts, 4 computers, one of which has 3 28" screens and SLI video cards to play the majestic beast in ultra wide.

I played xi for a decade. I played xiv for as long as I could. At the end of 1.0, it was pretty good, only suffering from massive population problems and slight content issues.

2.0 comes out, and I re-rolled on a new server where no one was 50. It was pretty good to start. Jobs, content, people running around and figuring stuff out. Got in a couple fate parties and quested everything. By the time I got 5 jobs to 25, I just wasn't seeing it. Everyone was 50 and grinding end game. Only a month had elapsed.

The fact that there was no party system bothered me. Sure you could form a party, but you didn't have to to grind fates, and even if you did it made no difference. There was no designated tank, healer, and dps, it was a clusterfuck of herding cats. The game needed some open world party system.

So I hopped in that dungeon finder thing, which of course, was a disaster. My first jobs were mrd and gld. I had the pull/hate/tank system down PERFECT. I could position mobs easily so the party wouldn't get beaten. I marked my primary and secondary and could hold that down pretty well. And I even did it on a controller, which SE seemed helbent on making impossible. It was going well, until I saw the healer over licking a rock and melee'ing. "OMG IM SUPPOSED TO HEAL?"

Now, I can't entirely fault the healer for this. This is basic party mechanics, sure, but the person was never given an opportunity to learn, practice, and hone their skills. In XI, this was done in the dunes starting at level 10, after you spent 10 levels alone with your skills and abilities, learning how to use them. Now, fate/grind and watch a couple cs's, and you're off to the dungeons.

So the new "dunes" is hte first dungeon apparently. Ok. Except you're suddenly in a timed win/lose situation where people are expecting "phat lootz" and an easy victory. So they tend to have very limited patience. Still, you coax the other players into being nice, and guide the healer to do perform their functions properly.

Next dungeon, the dps are all insane from rock licking healers in the first dungeon, or other tanks who don't know what ranged attack is, or hate control, and just go off in a fury attacking everything. I get it, you're angry, because people don't know how to do their jobs, because they've been forced into a life or death situation without any preperation.

I re-roll healer level that up, learn my skills, make my macros, etc. I get tanks that haven't a clue. At all. Having played both MRD and GLD, I knew what to do, and taught about 40 of htem, 5 or so didn't care and abandoned duty when it was harder than fate. Abandon Duty...

Abandon Duty. Because who cares? You'll never see those people again. Why even have blacklists? The fact that you play with the people on your server, over and over again, instills a sense of accountability, and reputation. And it also gives you the ability to teach and learn. "hey after this shoot me a tell and i'll go over on how to do xyz with you." But no, you'll never see them again.

And even if everything shifted. Fates went away and party systems were incorporated, and dungeons werne't isntanced from across a dozen worlds, there lies another problem. The world is not that big. The zones aren't big. You walk out the back door of uldah and you ahve a desert. A tiny little desert that ranges 25 levels. Walk out of bastok and you have a desert that is 10x the outside of uldah, and it's level 1-10, if that. THEN there's konstchat highlands, even vaster plains still only a few levels above the wasteland outside bastok. Then a central meeting place that takes you to 20. There isn't enough open land to accomidate an actual party system with the roaming clusterfuck of a party system taht could be incorporated.

SE never listened to their players before, why start now? "Don't give us ffxi-2!" is what people said, and for some reason,t hey listened. Even though there were a small group of people who actually cared that said "yes, ffxi-2. just revamp the graphics and we'll be cool with it, maybe some new content, eveyrone starts froms cratch and mix it up a bit". THe game would have been a killing out the door without a long and failed 1.0 with endless fixes.

I realize this is probably the nth time this has been brought up here, but I just can't handle the retail forums. They're quite simply retarded.

Maybe ff18 will be ffxi-2... I wish they'd realize that not everyone just wants to grind end-game.

Also, my 9 and 10 year old daughters that play have 50's and can run dungeons without issue. I've also not guided them much at all, i made them learn and do things the hard way.

Now that we've gotten past the "FIRST" posts... this is likely due to be put in the Random Complaint thread, even though discussion is nonexistent there and the fact this is a discussion driven post will be blown across deaf ears... if its not outright locked.

... regardless, OP makes some good and some really bad, if not simply misinformed points. Most people here can agree FFXIV needs some interesting open world content, as of right now open world is essentially a large pretty waiting room with FATEs. While I definitely don't think FFXI-2 would have been the wise choice, cause lets face it despite how bluntly rata put it, he is indeed right... its 2013, and your average gamer is lazy and stupid and want instant gratification, wanting nothing that is different from what other popular MMOs/WoW do, then fails to understand how playing the same game over and over isn't as exciting to them as it was in the first time.

FFXI has an increasingly niche market, and even if they did XI-2, just like the WoW/modernMMO crowd unsurprisingly crying boredom from playing a borrowed idea rehash game... if they gave us XI-2 we who enjoyed it would also grow bored much more quickly than we realize.

FFXIV is far from a bad game, people, including the OP, need to realize most of us get bored of it simply because we've been playing MMOs for like 10-12 years or more... eventually we grow bored of things we enjoy, no matter how much we enjoy it. it may be time to hang up your MMO hat for a few years and come back when the market has some fresh ideas, rather than copying whats popular and adding nothing new except the names and places.

The total absence of community is its own issue. Reflexes play a part in performance, but adequate play really just comes down to not being a moron. Learning a job in this game is no different than learning a job in XI. Find a Wiki or a friend, have a few questions answered, and spend a few minutes learning the rhythm. You don't need a grind to learn a job.

Well, this is only my opinion (I think a lot of the OPs points are valid) but so far I've only subbed for 2 months, but I've enjoyed almost all the time I've spent during those 2 months. FF14 isn't as hardcore as 11 (what is?) but if you don't rush to endgame (14's "endgame" is admittedly lacking) and just do what you want to do, there is still plenty to do. I don't have as much time to spend on games as I used to, so I find myself only subbing to 14 when I want to play it, and that works out pretty well for me. I'm a long way to go from exhausting all the content, and I only have 2 50s ATM.

I can see how you'd run out of stuff pretty fast if you were subbed for a longer period of time, but I find my "rotating sub" plan to be working for me so far, and it keeps the game fresh in my mind while I play other games, and the other games fresh when I play 14. Variety is the spice of life and all that. I'll probably sub again in March/April? I can see myself subbing like 4-6 months out of a year, but probably not more than that.

This is the reason why I shy away from MMO's these days. You're really not doing anything you haven't already done before. Stale genre is stale, the endgame of these MMO's are very bleh and generic.

People say FFXI is a nitch market, but is it really a nitche market? Or are the number of ffxi players staying relatively constant, and hte number of total people playing increasing?

If they had released xiv as xi-2 and curved xi to with abyssea instant level so people could "finish" the game, they'd all move to xiv.

People are forgetting, seemingly, the second part of MMO. It's RPG. Role Playing Game. There's a story, huge, dramatic, and you're in the center. The outer world is there and you level to progress the story, but FFXI wasn't all about "get ten million pieces of gear". You worked to progress story lines, and sure you grinded dynamis, sky, sea, etc. But the reward was not handed out like candy. It's the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality that is seemingly driving us to easier and easier games.

Back in the day, if you didn't win, you DIDN"T WIN. Period. No pat on the shoulder, etc. You had to play until you won. It's changed now. Sadly I don't think it's going to change back, but maybe that's for the new generation, and they're phasing us old folks out.

This game is about gear collection. Some like it, some don't. So far I like it.

Because this has pretty graphics and XI-2 would have presumably had pretty graphics.

OP wants a reskin of 2006-era XI. Well you know what? I want a 2013 reskin of Ogre Battle 64. I'm not getting it, though, and even if I did, it wouldn't be as good as the original because those old, 1999 ideas wouldn't work for shit in 2013 expectations.

XI-2 would be no different, pretty graphics or no.

I was trying to decide whether I should leave a snarky comment or actually try to be constructive today, and I guess I'll choose the latter.

I think OP should keep his eye on Camelot Unchained.

1999 ideas wouldn't work for shit in 2013 expectations
People really like to say this, but 2013 expectations is what made DoL and DoH almost totally worthless and gave us relatively boring armor choices. I don't miss the shitty grindiness and bad UI of ye olde MMOs but there's a lot of stuff I wish they'd risk bringing back instead of just treating playerbases like they're a bunch of retards.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?
