I'm trying to figure it out. My guess is, so far in the red from the 1.0 tragedy that they had to make a people pleaser to make money. I played first beta in 1.0 beta land clear through launch and up until the end, then 2.0 beta through launch up until october. I invested a great deal of time and money into the game. 4 legacy accounts, 4 computers, one of which has 3 28" screens and SLI video cards to play the majestic beast in ultra wide.
I played xi for a decade. I played xiv for as long as I could. At the end of 1.0, it was pretty good, only suffering from massive population problems and slight content issues.
2.0 comes out, and I re-rolled on a new server where no one was 50. It was pretty good to start. Jobs, content, people running around and figuring stuff out. Got in a couple fate parties and quested everything. By the time I got 5 jobs to 25, I just wasn't seeing it. Everyone was 50 and grinding end game. Only a month had elapsed.
The fact that there was no party system bothered me. Sure you could form a party, but you didn't have to to grind fates, and even if you did it made no difference. There was no designated tank, healer, and dps, it was a clusterfuck of herding cats. The game needed some open world party system.
So I hopped in that dungeon finder thing, which of course, was a disaster. My first jobs were mrd and gld. I had the pull/hate/tank system down PERFECT. I could position mobs easily so the party wouldn't get beaten. I marked my primary and secondary and could hold that down pretty well. And I even did it on a controller, which SE seemed helbent on making impossible. It was going well, until I saw the healer over licking a rock and melee'ing. "OMG IM SUPPOSED TO HEAL?"
Now, I can't entirely fault the healer for this. This is basic party mechanics, sure, but the person was never given an opportunity to learn, practice, and hone their skills. In XI, this was done in the dunes starting at level 10, after you spent 10 levels alone with your skills and abilities, learning how to use them. Now, fate/grind and watch a couple cs's, and you're off to the dungeons.
So the new "dunes" is hte first dungeon apparently. Ok. Except you're suddenly in a timed win/lose situation where people are expecting "phat lootz" and an easy victory. So they tend to have very limited patience. Still, you coax the other players into being nice, and guide the healer to do perform their functions properly.
Next dungeon, the dps are all insane from rock licking healers in the first dungeon, or other tanks who don't know what ranged attack is, or hate control, and just go off in a fury attacking everything. I get it, you're angry, because people don't know how to do their jobs, because they've been forced into a life or death situation without any preperation.
I re-roll healer level that up, learn my skills, make my macros, etc. I get tanks that haven't a clue. At all. Having played both MRD and GLD, I knew what to do, and taught about 40 of htem, 5 or so didn't care and abandoned duty when it was harder than fate. Abandon Duty...
Abandon Duty. Because who cares? You'll never see those people again. Why even have blacklists? The fact that you play with the people on your server, over and over again, instills a sense of accountability, and reputation. And it also gives you the ability to teach and learn. "hey after this shoot me a tell and i'll go over on how to do xyz with you." But no, you'll never see them again.
And even if everything shifted. Fates went away and party systems were incorporated, and dungeons werne't isntanced from across a dozen worlds, there lies another problem. The world is not that big. The zones aren't big. You walk out the back door of uldah and you ahve a desert. A tiny little desert that ranges 25 levels. Walk out of bastok and you have a desert that is 10x the outside of uldah, and it's level 1-10, if that. THEN there's konstchat highlands, even vaster plains still only a few levels above the wasteland outside bastok. Then a central meeting place that takes you to 20. There isn't enough open land to accomidate an actual party system with the roaming clusterfuck of a party system taht could be incorporated.
SE never listened to their players before, why start now? "Don't give us ffxi-2!" is what people said, and for some reason,t hey listened. Even though there were a small group of people who actually cared that said "yes, ffxi-2. just revamp the graphics and we'll be cool with it, maybe some new content, eveyrone starts froms cratch and mix it up a bit". THe game would have been a killing out the door without a long and failed 1.0 with endless fixes.
I realize this is probably the nth time this has been brought up here, but I just can't handle the retail forums. They're quite simply retarded.
Maybe ff18 will be ffxi-2... I wish they'd realize that not everyone just wants to grind end-game.
Also, my 9 and 10 year old daughters that play have 50's and can run dungeons without issue. I've also not guided them much at all, i made them learn and do things the hard way.
