    Home security cameras

The wife and I are considering getting some cameras for home use, and I'd like to hear some of your experiences if you have them. I don't care about HD, just something to keep an eye on the dogs, and eventually kids, and maybe point one at the front door for actual security. I'm not really a fan of the all-in-one DVR solutions as they typically seem to use coax. Wireless is preferable, but aside from the front door I have ethernet throughout the house so that is an option. I'm looking at around $50. For that range, D-Link seems to be the most popular on newegg with 4 eggs. But they still have their complaints, so I'd be interested in what others are using.

    DCS-930L - Basic camera
    DCS-931L - Adds Wi-Fi extender (don't care) and sound
DCS-932L - Adds night vision, which gets mixed reviews

    Thoughts?

I use Foscam ones, and they work pretty well for me.

Thanks, that suggestion led me to this. It might be closer to $70 to get a good camera from them, but that's not out of the question. How is the software? That's one of the most common complaints with D-Link, is that their software is a pain and it won't support any other type of camera.

Their web interface is ugly but works fine. There are good iOS and android apps (you'll probably use mobile apps to check on your house anyway while on the go):

Thanks for the input. The Foscam reviewers do tend to be happier with the night vision, so that's a plus. It sounds like the D-Link tends to switch over to night mode when there is still plenty of light available.

Edit: Out of curiosity, what model(s) do you guys have? For price and features, the Foscam FI8910W looks good, but I'm still looking.

I have an older model 8918W, but I recommended 8910W to my parents and they're happy with it (and its quite a bit faster than mine)

I've been eyeing this one on Kickstarter when it went up, seems promising. It is kickstarter though, so there may be pit falls to it.

    Does Blink Wrok Outside?
While Blink can be placed anywhere it's able to communicate with the Sync Module, the initial system is not designed to be weather-proof and we've yet to test for or establish temperature or humidity thresholds. However, we're excited about the opportunity to introduce outdoor-compatible products and accessories in the future.
    Meh. Will wait and see.

It's the clearest I have seen yet, only downside is that the higher bandwidth demand is noticeable. I have the older ones and the newer ones installed at one site, I can try to grab a picture later

I went ahead and ordered the 8910. Starting with one to test, and I'll maybe get more if I like it. That 9831 is cheaper than I expected for the resolution, but I'm not concerned with HD yet. Maybe down the road.
