IP Scanner that will give me the names of devices on the domain?
Due to really shitty record keeping before I started here, I am trying to figure out what static addresses are in use and what is available. I'm using Angry IP Scanner 3.0 which does good, but half the stuff that's in use doesn't kick back a device name. I'd rather avoid trying to log into 75 different devices here if at all possible. Anyone have any suggestions on ip scanners that can give me host names?

Hm, in conjunction with your Angry IP Scanner, try this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb490725.aspx
Get all the IPs, feed it into a batch file/script via nslookup and output it to a file.
This is presuming it's all in your local DNS though.
Just a quick thought, networks is not my strong area
edit: sorry reread your question and you mention some of it doesn't return a name ... that might be tricky now
-- and as I said network isn't my strong point lol

Looking more into this, I may have to manually dig. Looking through DNS, it appears a bunch of this is random vmware, drac's, etc which won't have a host name.

NMAP is good here, but if the device isn't registered in something it will be difficult to get the name. But NMAP will try everything it knows and its free/opensouce http://nmap.org/ and another option is Nessus http://www.tenable.com/products/nessus/nessus they offer a "student" subscription but I don't think it will give you what you are really looking for any more than NMAP

We have spiceworks, but since our supreme overlord loves to keep changing/updating it without telling us he is, thus changing the GUI, I only use that for searching by model PC so I can get model/sn's for inventory. This is more just to find out what we have on a subnet since keeping an inventory of statics is below most people here....
I'll give NMAP a try and see how that goes, thanks for the recommendation.
