I don't have any specific article to link, but I did some quick research and the number of autism cases from 2000 to 2010 friggin went sky high. Some said it was because of aspartame, or organic foods or some shit, some people said it was just because they changed the way the test for autism was conducted.

I honestly don't know, but if it's the test, or just general awarness, was the number of autistic people a constant throughout history? or did something cause this spike that is just now being discovered..

I personally think it's pretty stupid... kids that seem absolutely normal to me and their parents come up like, YEAH HE'S AUTISTIC IT'S REALLY TOUGH BUT WERE HAVING HIM TREATED....
i'm like... he's a 5 year old kid.... and he doesn't pay attention to stuff.... which is absolutely normal to me.... I just think it seems like a a load of shit.... someone please enlighten me.

A big part of it is that the autistic spectrum has widened and doctors are more aware of the condition. I do not think this is the new ADD, but it kind of would not matter if it was because there is no real treatment for it anyway.

The autistic spectrum label effectively just means that the kid is a little odd and off in their own world. Being severely autistic is another thing entirely.

It could be related to some environmental factor... Or not. It is probably a mix if genetics and environment like everything else.

My opinion is that it's most reasonable that the tests have changed and it's the next big thing.

It's not like ADHD didn't exist before 1970, we just didn't know what to call it. Same with autism.

Hard to really say without someone citing sources that I'm not willing to look up. I would be genuinely surprised if the rate of noticeably autistic (like, unable to function at all in social situations / society) children was rising at a substantial rate greater than just "oh we have a name for it now".

The big rise in diagnosis is, again this is unsourced, probably in the more mild field.

Autism at its core is one(or more) centers of your brain are hyper-active. So your focus as a human tends to shift to whatever the hyper-active portion is.

It's like having a permanent hard-on in your brain, all the blood is disproportionally rushing to one area.

For some people their math, language, art, etc areas are hyper-active and autism is generally seen as a "gift"(there's a strong correlation between higher IQ and being autistic).

For others with more severe cases, some area(s) are so hyper-active that they impede their bodily functions, and they can't act as "normal" humans. For severe cases it's sometimes likened to being stuck in your own imagination.

There's other forms of chromosomal autism (such as Fragile X), that are extremely severe but somewhat unrelated to the others.

Seriously, we're all autistic in some way or form. We post on a forum based around a video game that you had to be autistic to function in.

Like others have said, it's just blown out of proportion and it's the new "Well i'm not sure what your kid has, probably autism, leave me alone now I need to go do doctor stuff" response. People view autism, adhd and all sorts of shit like it's a serious debilitating illness which is only true of the outlying cases in my eyes.
