The measles outbreak comes after years of increases in the number of parents who refuse to get their children vaccinated. In California, the rate of kindergarten parents choosing the "personal belief exemption" to refuse vaccines doubled from 2007 to 2013. While the statewide rate of personal belief exemptions reached 3.15 percent, geographic clusters had significantly higher opt-out rates.

Maybe this will finally be the nail in the coffin of the anti-vax movement.

Melena and I are headed there for 6 nights starting Sunday and it's all we've been seeing on the Disney forums we frequent. I fucking hate the anti vax movement because it's hurting those who can't actually be vaccinated. I just keep thinking back to when I was in school how it was mandatory and those who weren't were a truly rare case, now it's just ridiculous. In our county in California alone are several cases and nearby have counties in high income areas with some of the highest non vaccinated people.. Ugh. I fucking hate people.

My older brother is an anti-vaxxing, organic, "no GMO", holistic, anti-fluoride, border-protecting, pro-gun hipster, but hippy he is far from in any honest sense of the word. I've already debunked the vax argument; no credible links to autism, how he's probably had more mercury from a single serving of salmon, that's only the flu vaccine anyways, yet still insists I haven't "done the research." Convincing this lot is going to take a lot more than Mickey getting the measles, I'm afraid.

I still remember giving my sister the biggest "WTF?!" face a few months back when we were driving in the car and she tried to tell me vaccinations were bad. I dared not probe into why since it only would've tempted me to drive off the road and into the valley below.

Vaccines aren't 100% effective, so you can get the non-vaccinated passing it on to an unlucky vaccinated few, but most distressingly, some people cannot be vaccinated even if they wanted to. Those who are too inmunocrompromised or those too young for vaccines are at special risk from dying from vaccine preventable diseases because the anti-vaxers refuse to vaccinate.

Many treatments target parts of the immune system, so a lot of people dealing with other health concerns are immunocompromised as well. Chemo/radiation, for example. Or Adalimumab, Infliximab, Natalimumab, methotrexate, azathioprine, and half a dozen others whose names I have forgotten. And some that never even had names.

Posters above tackled the herd immunity aspect of this. The other aspect is that most of these people are putting their kids at risk. The kids are too young to know any better and why should they have to suffer the consequences of the idiocy of their parents? It's not like they came out of the womb as staunch anti-vaxxers.

The idea of herd immunity is the more people that are immune in the "herd", the less likely those are who aren't immune will get sick (less people to pass on the infection) therefore less people get sick.

There's always Bell outliers in vaccinations, but you can seriously skew the curve by not vaccinating. The last thing you want is to be one of the unlucky ones who can't be vaccinated encountering some idiot that refused to and is sick.

Also, Disney didn't inform it's workers despite their claims they did, putting potentially putting employees and employees' family members who weren't vaccinated (immunocompromised, young children, etc.) at risk.

I definitely think McCarthy started it, but after having several debates with anti-vaxxers they have tried to move away from her. It's people like Dr. Sears who are the current problem.


This also poses me off because we were going to take my son on his first bday like we did his sister, but now I have to change plans because I need him to get his vax first, and it might be too late to get new reservations on a day we can all go.
