Please, let this be Obsidian dickslaping Bethesda on Elder Scrolls like they did with Fallout.
Fall 2024
Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel gave us a first deep-dive into the gameplay in Obsidian’s upcoming fantasy action RPG, from its dynamic combat, to its thoughtful reactivity, to its “colorful, vibrant, strange” world set in the Living Lands. Avowed continues Obsidian’s signature style of creating games with deep themes and player choice at the forefront.
Not only will you make narrative decisions that can impact changes in the game down the line, but Avowed is also looking to offer choice in combat. Gameplay Director Gabe Paramo discussed not only how varied your weaponry will be – with melee weapons, ranged guns and bows, and magic-based wands (even dual-wielded wands!) to name a few – but how flexible combat can be, allowing you to quickly change loadouts for enemy encounters. Swappable loadouts mean you can approach combat however feels right to you.
Art Director Matt Hansen then explained how the Living Lands is a mysterious island made up of wildly varied regions offering visually diverse backdrops and intriguing settings to explore. With secrets hidden throughout the regions, you’ll take in barren deserts, verdant forests, blighted wastes, volcanic biomes, and more.
That’s not all for Avowed, however – make sure to tune in to the Xbox Podcast on Monday, January 22 for an exclusive interview with some of Obsidian’s developers, offering even more information on the gameplay reveal.
Get ready to carve your own path through Avowed when it launches this fall for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Cloud – and arrives with Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass on day one.
Is it weird that the game Avowed appears to be about an Unavowed character and the game Unavowed was about a group of ostensibly Avowed people?
Anyone been playing this? Whats the consensus?
I'm still finishing up Infinite Wealth but I was eyeing this game for afterwards
i'm about 10 hours in, having a lot of fun. a lot of people are saying Skyrim successor or comparing it to KCD 2 because it's a first-person RPG but isn't really much like them. not a simulator-y game at all but a combat-heavy action-RPG with Obsidian writing and questing and character building around it (first-person Witcher 2?). writing is uneven so far (suffers from Marvelism with too much bad modern quippiness and i hate one of the companions for it), but frequently an NPC or a quest come out of nowhere and it's like damn yeah this the studio that wrote New Vegas and Knights of the Old Republic 2.
most importantly combat and movement feel great, you can wreck havoc on enemies as a mage or ranger and parkouring around the very pretty world is grand. the world itself is very dense with things to do and discover. kind of an anti-Breath of the Wild where the zones are small but exploration is always rewarded. systems proving great where the plot/writing are uneven, which is weird for an Obsidian game but here we are.
i would proooolllyyyyyyy still have preferred a classic CRPG sequel to Pillars of Eternity 1+2 but so far a solid entry into the IP.
Skyrim was already claimed this month anyway with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (which I was shocked it did not have a thread).
i think people see a sword in a first-person fantasy hand and their brains shut off as the Skyrim klaxon starts sounding
Damn yeah I wanna play Kingdom Come too. So many games, so little time
I can see the Skyrim comparisons with KCD2 in some areas. Lots of well-established and grounded "Ye Olde" towns, a shit ton of exploration and random wandering. While the plot is amazing, wandering around and getting into all kinds of random shit in the world is absolutely amazing.
Where its nothing like Skyrim is in the writing department. Bethesda's Lead Writer is a talentless hack who literally said that writing in games is pointless aside from getting people into the game itself, which is the dumbest dogshit take from someone in charge of all the writers on the staff. Absolutely reprehensible.
God damnit I knew nothing about this and the Internet is exuding praise for it. I really don't want another RPG to must play

Luckily it's a purely single player experience so you can just get to it when you get to it.
I want to play it but I'm not getting to it until I burn out on content from MH Wilds, which I'm wholeheartedly expecting to dominate all my free time for a month or so when it comes out like most MH games do
Just finished tutorial island and met the first actual companion and was instantly like i know that voice! Does kinda make me want to replay all the Mass Effects again.
lolz yeah Obsidian knew what they were doing with that cast. characters are even a bit similar.
