Help me choose a tablet

My wife is looking at IPads for work as something to draw on, and take hand written notes that will automatically be converted into text.

Is an iPad the way to go or are there other brand tablets that do a better job of this? I'm 100% ignorant of the tablet marketplace

You have 2 choices if you want a clean, lag free experience: tab S8 (lite/plus/normal) or ipad. Android tabelts really dont measure up to the work that apple has put into iOS, and even a base model $329 ipad with an apple pencil will be a 'better' experience than the tab S8 for drawing and handwriting, but if you're against buying apple the tab s8 is where you'd go. If you wanna be fancy go for an ipad air for an M1 chip, wouldn't bother with ipad pro unless she wants essentially a laptop/netbook replacement due to the price however the 120hz display is nice.

I own a full set iPad pro from late 2017, with pencil and keyboard. Still holds up extremely well, both battery and performance wise. Pencil is very smooth and can translate into text.

One of my best tech investments. With office suite and one note I rarely carry my laptop around anymore.

You’ll have two important choices to make.

1. Storage Capacity - Make sure you get something large enough depending on your usage. If you are going to keep photos and going to edit get at least 256 gigs.
2. Whether you need cellular (supports sim card for data) or not (wifi, tethering only).

Both are non-upgradable (storage is partially but you’d want internal one).

For iPad I would wait in November

Rumor that updates are coming in October, so older model might drop prices a bit

Not so much anymore- iPads can use external storage. The USB C variants can do a direct USB C connection, the Lightning variants need a fecking dongle.
