Any International Relations buffs up in here?

I have an assignment in my IR class to write up a paper in a liberalist point of view. I figure since alot of you seem to have very enthusiastic and heartfelt conversations over some of the issues going on in the world you might be able to give me some ideas.

Here is the basic question: Illustrate two different issues related to IR. GLOBAL ISSUES ONLY (I.e. nothing domestic like gun control or abortion in the US). They can be historical.

Basically I'm looking for two issues that I can really buff up and that will be interesting to do research on from a LIBERALIST point of view. 3-5pg essay.

Help me out I'll give you a hug, or a cookie if you're on of my gaiboys up in here.

Hmm, been a while since I thought about this (political science degree, woo woo) but I'd probably choose something like the global view of the war in iraq or any of the related issues of terrorism prevention. The fact that "we need to do something" is the same for the conservative and liberal sides, but the "something" we need to do varies quite a bit. I'm sure you could bullshit a lot on that if you need to.
Recent U.S. Presidents have had some very big difference in international relations that you could use to pad out your paper from a historical perspective. I'm not sure if that's too domestic or not, but it's certainly something you could manipulate to get a few pages.

Just FYI, if you don't know already, IR and PolySci professors seem to not like it if you turn into a frothing maniac about an issue in a paper, so just be careful to back up anything you write with some good references, even if it's your interpretation. Many of my fellow students learned that the hard way.

    Lbelle.

Look up the relationship between China and England during the 19th and 18th centuries regarding the Opium trade. From a Liberalist point of view, you can identify the problems that Opium was causing in China and how the British government endorsed the trade despite the extreme negative repercussions. You can also talk about the Opium wars that occurred as a result.

A more recent event you can look up is the relationship between Pakistan and the United States in the "War on Terror." You can dig up some nice stuff about that on the internet and in offline news publications.

    Happy Hunting.

Read Clash of Civilizations by Huntington. Its a book but theres a much shorter essay out there. The wiki article skims over it nicely. I'm not sure how much those can help but it's probably a really good start.

    Wiki Entry

If you want something more specific, you can always discuss easy stuff like Polution, Israel, Pakistan/India etc.

<benja> A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question
asked was:"Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the
food shortage in the rest of the world?"
<benja> The survey was a huge failure...
<benja> In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant.
<benja> In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant.
<benja> In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant.
<benja> In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant.
<benja> In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant.
<benja> In South America they didn't know what "please" meant.
<benja> And in the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant

here is one that has had a major recent world conference on.

world AIDS epidemic. specifically in central africa and developing nations.

damn liberalists expect us wealthy western nations to pay for and help these impovrished african nations with their rampant AIDS epidemic. at a low cost of something like $150/treatment/person.

its a good topic, as it is a world issue. old opnion was when i was growing up and AIDS was still a GAY desease, was put them "all" on an island and let GOD take care of it.... not very politically correct for today. but it sure would have cut down on costs. some of these african nations have extremely high infection rates... like over 30%.... its a real problem there. and only the western contries have the medications for anytype of control/prevention, since alot of the new cases are newborn babies. if you can be objective about it, would make a great topic. regardless of your views.

You can write about Darfur, that's a hot button topic. Or the classic Tibet/China thing... if that's even a thing anymore... prolly is, I stopped caring about world and national issues, I'm a state person.

Daahan, if you're around I wrote up my part of the paper on the Opium War and showed it to Kuno and he thought it was pretty good, but I'd also like you're opinion on it since you gave me the idea. If you don't mind of course! Just IM or PM me if that's cool with you <3 thanks!
