Which of these 2 processors is best?

(This is for a desktop PC)
I typically run FFXI, as well as other lighter things like DoD, Counterstrike, Lineage II, RO and the like. I already have over a gig of ram for the secondary computer I am making, as well as an Albatron motherboard.

Which of these two processors I have around will be best?

    Intel Pentium 4 2.4g
    or
    AMD Athlon XP 3200+?

I'm a bit clueless when it comes to processors

I would suggest neither, instead choose a dual core one, maybe an Asus motherboard, too.

I just bought an AMD one again. I know dual core are better, but I only really use my computer for anime and FFXI, so I don't need much.

Dual core do seem to be the way to go if you want it to last a while though.

Intel Core 2 is spanking and in the lead right now for the best desktop chip.

But between the two he listed the AMD is faster.

If you just choosing between those 2, I have a similar comparison with 2 of my old computers.
One a 2.5ghz P4 and 1 a 3200+ AMD, the 3200+ was better all around I'd say. Cooler and slightly faster performance.

    yeah

I'd rather just choose between these two cause its for a 2nd computer I'll just have sitting around, to dual box or in case anything goes wrong with my main one. I'm not looking to shell out dough for the newer processors, just have these other 2 sitting around that friends don't want, so am deciding which to use.

In that case, definitely the 3200+.

The 3.2k is definitely better but the amd seemed to be hotter than the intel. Well that's for my case for the amd, it's running at a cpu temp of 55-60

    3200+ without a doubt. (2.2GHz)

Greater peformance at a lower cost

Upgrade the AMD to the 3700+ It's not expensive and is worth the price but if you don't then AMD is still good.

It really depends on the chips themselves, there's a multitude of chips with those ratings.

Most likely the athlon XP is going to be a little faster, but I'm about 90% certain there was a (brief) time period around when those chips came out where the intels had hyperthreading and the amd's did not. If you ended up with a couple from that time frame, the p4 would be the better performer.

Basically in the end I'd say those 2 chips are close enough that if you can find exactly which ones they are, and do a little research on them both, I would go with the one that has bigger cache.

    Is the AMD a Socket A or a 939?

If it's Socket A I'd assume it's Barton then I'd say screw them both. A 2500+ can run at 3200 with default everything.

Hard to find the 2500+ AMD Barton....I have one and overclocked it to 3200+ with no sweat.

AMD by far the best with what you chose.
