Bandwitch Restrictor(I think thats what its called?)

Is there any known way to get passed a bandwith restrictor. My dorm internet sucks and that pretty much sums it up. I'd prefer the method be free but if theres paid programs please mention them as well. Thanks in advance

If the limit it set by software connected to your LAN, then probably no.

Well not a software client side not sure too much how that works but I didn't install anything on my part. Would your statement also stay true is if its just server side?

If the hub/router/switch/whatever that connects your dorm's LAN with the internet has software on it then you're probably out of luck.

Theres too many factors.. youd have to know exactlly whats blocked/limited/whats not/etc. If you know that info I know it's possible with Linux, but I dunno if there are any Windows stuff.

usually http is unrestricted. For P2P I used to use a program called Ares, which disguised its traffic as normal web traffic. I don't know how to tunnel ffxi through http though.

I though bandwidth was the least of FFXI's problems. Isn't it capped at dialup speed anyway?

You'd be surprised how tight some admins make their bandwidth rules, I could login but it was unplayable when I lived in the dorms.

Hmm, didn't consider that. In my dorms they started the bandwidth restriction shortly after I started there, because too many people were using kazaa. It made Diablo 2 a pain, but didn't affect EQ or DirectConnect at all. Then a couple years later I was back in the dorms for Summer, and they had some weird daily limit or something, because EQ and DC both got less and less usable over time. Then when I was back there two Summers later, FFXI, City of Heroes and BT were unaffected again.

The important part for the OP is that it all depends on how the bandwidth restriction works and what you're trying to use.

    If you wanna play ffxi..

    Get a dialup account.

They are pretty cheap these days and ffxi runs great over it as long as you are not trying to do something else at the same time.

In college, I had to get a dialup account to play.

And since where I went to college they only let two phone numbers bases be dialed (you know, the second three before the four digits), I had to use AOL.

Which is free for a few months, depending on what they do when you call to cancel. Rinse/repeat the AOL account every couple of months for your college career and there you go.

AOL dialup is free now, or so I had heard. I'll double check.
