    Math help bad!

    Ok so in Math 086 we recently covered solve for x. I understood it at the time but because of illness and lazyness I missed the test and the makeup but the teacher is awesome so she gave me another chance to make the test up! But the problem now is its not fresh in my mind. I was going to take it to day but after looking over the problem I told her "I would rather do it the final makeup you offered me and get a higher score than do it now and bomb it. But what I need to know now is what is the easiest way to solve for x. The problems follow this layout (This is a layout not an actual problem):
    -5 + 2x = 8x - 4

    Please explain it in a way that is fast and easy. Thank you so much BG!

    move X's to one side, move numbers to other and solve.

    So like this?

    8x + 2x = -5 - 4

    you have got to be kidding me, that's like elementary school math.

    -5 + 4 = 8x -2x
    -1= 6x
    x = -1/6

    -5 + 4 = 8x -2x
    -1= 6x
    x = -1/6
    So you added the -5 + 4 = -1
    Then you Subtracted the 8x -2x = 6x
    -1= 6x
    Then you turned it into a negative fraction
    x = -1/6

    Correct? or is there a method that I'm missing to turn it into a fraction?

    Is it bad that as a math major in college, it took me a quick sec to rethink? Apparently too much counting of beers and not enough solving of basic algebra.

    He just divided by 6 on each side. I hope this is an easy class or you're seriously boned.

    Ok thank you I understand it now... The class is easy very easy but the fact is I havn't done that in two weeks and we only worked on it for one! Now we are on Multiplying and Dividing polynomials which is very very easy because its fresh in my mind.

    This is how you should solve this problem:
    1) collect all "x" values on one side of the equality
    -5 + 2x = 8x - 4

    (Subtract 2x from each side of the equality to cancel out the x term on the left)
    -5 + 2x - 2x = 8x - 4 - 2x
    -5 + 0x = 6x - 4
    -5 = 6x - 4

    2) collect all "non-x" values on the other side of the equality

    (Adding 4 to each side of the equality to cancel out the number on the right)
    -5 + 4 = 6x - 4 + 4
    -1 = 6x

    3) divide each side of the equality by the constant multiplier of x

    Dividing by 6
    -1/6 = 6x/6
    -1/6 = x

    If you show your work like this, you'll get full marks. I suggest trying this method on some problem sets from your textbook to reinforce it and to ensure that there are no "hidden tricks" that you don't yet know.

    Thats called combining like terms XD <----(teacher but so what)

    -5 + 2x = 8x - 4

    Step 1: Group all like terms together on the same sides. All x's on one side(preferably left) and all other numbers on the right side.

    2x - 8x = -4 + 5

    Adding a positive 5 to both sides cancels out the -5 on the left, and adds it to the right. Adding a negative 8x (also known as subtracting positive 8x) to both sides cancels out the -8x on the right, and adds it to the left, thereby grouping like terms together so they can be added/subtacted with each other.

    Step 2: Combine Like Terms

    -6x = 1

    Okay so plain and simple here, 2x - 8x is equal to -6x, and -4 + 5 is equal to 1. This should be basic math, no problem here.

    Step 3: Get the x by itself.

    -6x/-6 = 1/-6

    Dividing a -6 by both sides cancels out the -6 on the -6x, and combines it with the 1 on the other side of the equal sign, thereby getting the x by itself.

    Thus we get the answer:

    x = -1/6 (negative one-sixth)

    Extra notes:

    This has nothing to do with the original question, but will be good to remember for the test.

    If you happen to have a fraction multiplied with the x, that you need to get rid of, such as 1/6x, you should multiply by the denominator of the fraction to remove it to the other side. So multiply by 6. 6(1/6x) = x, then multiply that 6 to the other side so that you remember that is still needs to stay in the equation.

    Hope this helped ^^

    Edit: Either you guys are too fast, or I'm too slow a typer ; ;
