I got reactivated out of the Reserve, now being assigned to Munich for 3 years back on active duty (which Im probably going to take the bonus and stay in, fuck it)

So, please, tell me where to go / what to see, the last time I was "home" was when I was a very small child. My German is still alright, I can speak it well.


Dont just say the RLD lol, tell me what to go check out!

I haven't been to München in a few years now, but I must say you probably got stationed in one of my favorite cities in the world. What kind of stuff do you like to do though? There's always the Hofbrau Haus which pretty much everyone knows of. It's a good place to start for Americans probably. If I remember right it's right across from a hard rock cafe to incase you really start to crave a good burger. The Hofbrau Haus(no idea if I'm spelling that right) is like a trational german beer hall, but a little more touristy. So it's kinda like doing German traditions with americans to help ease you into the culture. It's still a lot of fun tough, and of course the beer is amazing.

Other than that I'd say just walk around the city. It's huge and everywhere you look there is something to do.

Oh and one thing you must do is try every single döner kabob place in the city until you find the best one. Döners = best food ever.

I got a friend stationed just outside of trier (I think a couple hours from munich). They go to paris quite a bit.

The language is very easy to learn. The only thing I had trouble with was memorizing articles (der, die, das) for "the" - it's just remembering which words go with which article other than that the sentence structure is pretty close to English and the culture is fucking amazing ~I am about 1/4german ethnicity so I love every minute learning. I'd absolutely LOVE to visit Deutschland someday...

As for places I wanted to visit, I always thought Koln looked beautiful :D

I believe one of the oldest churches still in use is in Koln. I used to take German and I kind of miss it, but yet again I hated my teacher's teaching style/methods.

Yeah I took a college course for Intro to German and the teacher said the hardest things are the different noun genders since you need to know the article for each noun because gender rules dont always apply.

Yea they don't. Der is supposed to be the masculine article, and Die is feminine, and Das is kinda like the neutral one...but there are weird exceptions...like the word for mother falls into the "die" category but the word for girl goes in neutral "das" so it's almost 100% memory.

And to Deuc's comment above - yeah, teaching style has a lot to do with it. My teacher was very visual and made it a lot of fun to learn. Amazingly, I never even wanted to skip that class because I was so interested and I found it very easy to learn from her. I <3 it when teaching style and learning styles just 'click'. Too bad it's so rare to find (might just be me though).

My friend, who lived in Germany for 8 years, said it was one of the only buildings in Koln to survive WWII. So we were standing there looking at this MASSIVE church and I said, "Of course they didn't bomb the fucker, it's an awesome landmark" "Go to that big church turn SW 5 minutes drop your bombs!"

He didn't quite like that.... lol

Walked to the top of one of those spires.. that's A LOT of stairs.

Well, I've been to Munich and the surrounding areas once before. This is what I suggest.

Castle Neuschwannstein. Coincedentially the same castle Walt Disney used as a template to create that opening blue-screen sequence that he used as a trademark for his movies. Unfortunately never got to actually go in and see the place, but the surrounding view is gorgeous, especially ona foggy/rainy morning.

This ones a bit more morbid, but definitely a profound trip nonetheless.

Other then that, I wish I could remember the hotel we stayed in for you. It had a nice open bar and game room in the basement. Would be a nice place to unwind.

might be a long drive to them, but in the area of Bayern i used to live in, there was Rothenburg ob der Tauber(amazing town, surrounded by city walls, all traditional houses etc lots to see), Ansbach, Frankfurt, and if you're a fan of mine (not likely) check out Schillingsfuerst =3 was the town i used to live in

all those locations are pretty close to eachother, but quite a drive from Munich i believe

Don't let this derail, make a new thread or pm me if you wish, but what you just said is not an exception. I've studied this numerous times in my linguistics and german classes. Die/Der/Das are not named so because it's 'supposed' to be masculine/feminine/neuter. They are named so because people realized they had 3 sets of articles and needed a way to categorize them. They could very well have been named black/white/yellow. Does it really make sense that a door is 'woman' or a table is 'man'? Not really, but that's how they are categorized. If you wanted you could agrue that the genders were named so because back in the day they said this group is usually toward things that are males irl and this one females, but then it would make sense for Mädchen to be das because well...little girls weren't really considered people back in the day . A true exception to the gender rule would be something like 'agua' in spanish. For some reason it is masculine when it's singular and then feminine when it's plural.

After reading this I realize I'm a picky bastard when it comes to details...

You're a lucky guy. Germany is a fucking amazing place to live. It's beautiful, the food is fantastic, there's tons of shit to go see and do, the list goes on and on. It's such a shame about a lot of the people that get stationed over there and never leave post, but I doubt you're goin to be like that. Enjoy it over there!

I don't know much about Munchen, but if you get a chance, get down into Baden-Wurttemberg, Heidelberg especially is a kickass town.
