Yea they don't. Der is supposed to be the masculine article, and Die is feminine, and Das is kinda like the neutral one...but there are weird exceptions...like the word for mother falls into the "die" category but the word for girl goes in neutral "das"

so it's almost 100% memory.
And to Deuc's comment above - yeah, teaching style has a lot to do with it. My teacher was very visual and made it a lot of fun to learn. Amazingly, I never even wanted to skip that class because I was so interested and I found it very easy to learn from her. I <3 it when teaching style and learning styles just 'click'. Too bad it's so rare to find (might just be me though).
