    My Favorite Paradox.

    Three people rent a hotel room for the night. They pay $10 each, for a total of $30
    The manager realizes that the room actually cost $25, so he walks up to the room and gives them back $5.
    They each take $1, and give the manager the remaining $2
    This means that each person paid $9, and the manager got $2.
    9x3 + 2 = 29. Where'd the last dollar go?

    What? He still had 25 + 2 dollars = 27 + the 3 they got back = 30.

    25/3 != 8. So each person paid 9.3333333333

    $25,
    +$5 (A $1, B$1, C$1, Manager$2)

    total paid $25 + 3 =28, and the manager has the remaining $2.

    the statement of "each person paid $9" is incorrect, each of them paid "$28/3".

    Oops, each person paid 8.333333. Everyone has an extra dollar and the manager has 2.

    8.33x3= 25 + 3 (each person has) + 2 (the manager has)

    nah, your initial $9.333.. is correct

    Yeah, the trick to this problem lies in the fact that you'd arrive at that 9 through the following fallacy. Due to the sequencing of the explanation, it's easy to trip yourself up on it.

    30 (old price) - 3 (money they were given back) == 27
    27 + 2 (the manager's share) == 29 (the price paid, supposedly)

    You have to work from the other side of the problem to get there, or the way you looked at it. Both work.

    (25 / 3) == 8.3 repeating, so let's say with the money back, the rooms actually cost 8.33. (5 / 3) is 1.6 repeating, so 1.67. They pocket a buck each and bring the room cost to 9 by giving 67 cents to the manager.

    (correcting a major fuckup with this edit, but I'd just go with other people's explanations anyway since they're better)

    You're just doing it wrong...

    they gave him 30, he gave 5 back, but he STILL HAS 25.

    Each of the three takes 1 back, 28... and he keeps 2 for himself, 30.

    But yeah if you work it the other way around it doesn't make sense.

    Probably should be titled "Favourite mindfuck"
    in the end everybody paid $9. So $27 on manager's hand which is $25 from the actual room cost and $2 from the corruption. and those guys still got $1, which is $9 less(the fake cost of room per person) from their initial $10 each

    All numbers were used 8)

    At no point in this entire thread did anyone ask the question of "How much did the hooker cost?'

    I think inserting the hooker "X" factor in this problem at this time should provide for a good 10-12 more points.

    It's just a problem with incredibly overcomplicated math. At First they all pay 30$. Then the manager gives them back the 25$. Now at this point they have all paid 25$/3 or 8.33$. Then they each give the manager a dollar so they have then paid 9.33$ each.

    9.33 x 3 = 28 dollars paid by hotel-payers

    28 + 2 extra dollars they should have after tipping the manager = 30 total

    End problem.

    Edit: I forgot that they only gave the manager 2 dollars but switch that around and it will still be correct. The main recognition you have to make is how much they paid when the manager gives them their 5$ back.

    the easiest way for me to do this is to mark each bill sequentially 1,2... 30.
    guy A contributes 1-10
    guy B contributes 11-20
    .. C .... 21-30

    manager gives back #1, #11, & #21. the other 2 don't matter since he pockets them.25 + 3 +2 = 30. the 9x3 stuff is just counting wrong.
