2 cable modems.

A question about cable modems. If my main cable line is split and both lines go to a seperate cable modem, will the person on the first modem affect my bandwidth? or are they handled seperately?

Just want to know before I drop money on this.

Main cable line, be more specific. Do you have two completly seperate lines coming into your house from the pole? (It's probably not this, but just in case) Or the line coming into your house and then is split?

If its the latter, then no, its still going through the same cable back to the telephone pole. I did this in my old house. Had a cable in the basement and a cable upstairs, it was an old house so I couldnt run wire up and down so I just got an extra modem. It doesnt really matter anyway because the person in the house next to you is going to affect your bandwidth anyway.

Based on a UK system so an American system could be different:

You cannot split one line into two modems unless your planning on having a second line installed by your provider, which wouldn't effect your bandwidth. You will only ever be able to use one 'modem' on one line.

If the second user is in your house, then you can go for a DSL router (wireless or wired, depending on how you want it). This will split the connection between 4 people generally (wired) or up to 16 people (wireless).

The router will try and maintain a fair balance between PC's but as long as the connection isn't been stretched to it's maximum, it will allocate unused bandwidth if one of the two PC's is wanting it. Adversly, this sometimes will have an effect on the other user slightly, and more so if they are uploading large quantities of date.

There is one line coming in to my house and I wanted to split it and run two different modems.

The reason I ask is because the person living above me (I live in a basement apartment) has got to be running some kind of server because the loading of web pages alone makes my eyes bleed. And we are on the same router currently.

If this solution won't work, is there a way I can turn down his dominance over the internet? The router is in my room.

Depends on what type of router it is, you can set up some rules and such if you know what youre doing. Other than that, youre kinda screwed, you could maybe get a DSL service as well though.
