    Satelite laptop

Heres a question for people. I'm probably gonna be forced to go somewhere far from civilization for a while. Is there anything I can get that will allow me to go online using satelite connection or whatever from outside the country? I've heard of a few ways to do this but it seems super expensive and I heard its kind of slow. Anyone know anything about this stuff?

    Unless something has changed..

Anything that you could afford requires a dial up connection in addition to the satellite link. ANY satellite ISP will have very high latency 1000ms+ (you won't be able to play ffxi, period).

Your typical satellite ISP sends you data via satellite but you don't talk back to the satellite and instead do your uploads over a dialup modem.

There are two way satellite links but those are much more expensive and they still require dialup.

Your best bet is to find some sort of dialup and a phone line where you are going, especially if you want to do stuff like IM people or log in ffxi to chat.

I dunno if dialup will be an option because I'll be in another country, not sure if it will work/be very doable. I guess all those scifi moves with the people in the laptops doing stuff ruined what I thought a satellite connection would be.

The best solution is just not to go.

You'd be surprised though, some pretty weird remote places in the world(like Australia) have managed to get Internet somehow. Figure out how the natives do it where you go and do the same

I wasn't being sarcastic when I meant it far from civilization. And not going is not an option because I'd just rather do that.

Which country will you be in? It's possible you'll be able to get broadband via your mobile phone with a 3g card if there's coverage. It's still fairly costly, but gradually coming down in price.

You can play FFXI fine on a satellite connection, just not a FPS. One I have runs like 90 a month and I can 2 box while checking the duck or fuck thread and not lag out, so isn't too bad.

I use Directway(Hughes Net). It's about 80 a month I think, you will have around 600-1500 (varies randomly) ping on vent, I have 0 problem dual boxing and browsing, but you have to wait like 2 seconds before you cast if you were running or something like that, just laggy.

Eh, I use my cell phone (A blackberry pearl) as a modem from time to time. I connect to it via bluetooth to my laptop and have a 100kbps connection. I'm able to play FFXI and communicate with some but not too much lag. Most cell phone companies like T-mobile (the one I have, not familiar with others) will work if I leave the country and depending on the type of plan you have, they won't charge for roaming.

    Consider that an option kuno.

I have 2 cell phones in a family plan and pay $60 for both. For my blackberry I pay an extra $30 because of the services. I also spoil myself silly and have the sprint wireless broadband which is like a 2mb wireless connection lol but only works in the US.

Isn't there anything better concerning pure satellite (no dialup) connections? You'd think the military would have come up with something, if nobody else.

I don't have a cellphone plan/service that can do that. I just purchase minutes when I require it because I rarely rarely use it.
