    CPU Temp

It says my CPU temp is 80 degrees C. Is that bad? I've been noticing lots of lag when alot of stuff is going on in Diablo II (which shouldn't be happening on my system imo)

3.0 Intel Pentium 4 Prescott processor
    radeon x1550 256 vid card
    1k ram
    80gig hardrive

The lag started up suddenly the other day and I can't seem to git rid of it

    Re: CPU Temp

the 1k ram might have something to do with it (I am sure you meant 1 gig)

My system started lagging really bad on FFXI due to a overheating processor. 80C is REALLY high for a processor temp. Sounds like your fan went out or your sink (or is it synk? lol) is bad. Might wanna try some thermal grease on the bottom of the sink. Careful with this though as some sinks use a thermal pad instead of grease. If that doesnt help ... replace the fan and sink. I ended up having to replace mine and FFXI runs alot smoother now so yeah. If your lagging on diablo your processor is probably on the verge of burning up. If your system has ever suddenly restarted (mine did multiple times) while your running alot of stuff it may be due to the processor's fail safe system shutting your computer down before the processor burns up.

Thats a few degrees outside the normal maximum recommended highest operating temperature lol. Stop what you're doing and get better cooling or you're gonna fry your shit. Check to see if your thermal paste has gone bad and replace it.

You could fry eggs on your heatsink probably.

Editing: I would be careful with it running at 80c lol. I'm guessing its not under complete stress, so it being the Summer; make sure the PC is vented good. And all the dust is cleaned from the case.

    Re: CPU Temp

well im buying a new processor the allendale e4300 brand thingy core 2 duo w/e yea soon. It games with the fan and all that stuff too so i guess that will fix it. The fan im using now is from like 2002 =/ yea...

edit: actually i think the main problem is the CPU tower sits on its side rather than sitting up. The latch that the fan latches too for the processor snappped when putting the fan on the new mobo so the fan/heatsink do not sit on the processor all that well (they;re on it just not latched down) im pretty sure that's bad now that i think about it =/

    Re: CPU Temp

the heatsink is not all that hot... so it is the fact that the fan doesn't latch onto the motherboard and it's just sitting on the processor?

I'm not sure if you're lucky you're not tripping hardware safeguards and shutting down every time you boot up, or not. I accidentally unseated my cpu heatsink fan while installing another hard drive and it shut down before I could boot up before half a minute passed. Frankly, if it's running that hot I wouldn't even be turning it on until you fix the clamps or order a new mobo. You can't run well like that.

    Re: CPU Temp

    Different processors have different safeguards.

    - Some fail to do anything and get the hardware toasted.
    - Some simply halt/shutdown the system before reaching a critical temperature.
    - Some lower the clock frequency in order to generate less heat and avoid reaching a critical temperature, which explains the loss of performance.

Anyways, bringing your hardware to those high temperatures for prolonged times, might not destroy it immediately, but you are most likely reducing it's useful lifetime a lot.

Well I've ordered a new mobo, and a dual core processor that will be in thursday so IF i overheat trash this computer I no longer care ^_^ Coolest thing about new mobo is it doesn't have clamps for fan/heatsink has cool METAL notches and not shitty plastic

    Re: CPU Temp

The only time I have seen my CPU speed near that high is when in dynamis or something while playing FFXI with lots of people and action ... and thats because FFXI is HEAVILY dependant on CPU over the Graphics Card (why oh why I dont know).
