    Wikipedia Scanner

    http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/

This nifty little website allows a person to go in and look at the edits that a organization made on Wikipedia.

    lets take and example....
    http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3.../SExample1.jpg

OK, next it will pull up a page with that organizations IP's and it will show you how many edits they made.
    http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3.../SExample2.jpg

After this choose an artical that has been edited. This one looks good
    http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3.../SExample3.jpg

    and thus this.
    http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...Example4-1.jpg

    Gets changed to this.
    http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3.../SExample5.jpg

Other good ones to look up stuff for is the CIA and Wal Mart though I'm sure that almost all major organizations have made changes to Wiki at one point or another.

Hah this is funny. I seriously do know Virgil...he lived in the dorm I used to live in and was quite good friends with one of my close friends.

I remember seeing the article in Wired. Didn't suprise me that much. You should try to dig up the info on him a few years ago when he hacked the University of Alabama student id card system and was able to make his own...

Maybe it's all a clever ploy by Blizzard.

Well the only thing that I can think of is that SE ether wanted to make it seem like there RMT problem wasn't that bad, or to try and scare people away from WoW because the RMT issue was so big, but the relative size of the community vs rmt I think that at that point FFXI and WoW at that point where about equal. Should be noted that this happened when both announced there first wave of RMT bans.

As far as finding out about this, I herd about it on This Week in Tech podcast, aka TWit, but it's been all over the webs they found the story in Wired, and it's also been mentioned on Penny Arcade and Game Politics as well.

That's what I was thinking. It could just be someone browsing that works there.

    Re: Wikipedia Scanner

Although the edit was done by Square Enix itself, a single account representing the whole of that entity, not just an individual user who is associated with SE. So either they give their official SE wiki-editing account password freely to employees, or the employee who owns the SE account on wiki is the one who plays WoW.

The change doesn't seem to have a name attached to it, just an IP address where the name would usually live- suggesting it was an anonymous edit from a block of IPs owned by Square.

But I thought you had to sign in to edit things on a Wiki.

Nope, only if the page is protected. That's the whole point of protecting a page after all.

So, does this imply that the scanner isn't showing us Square Enix's official wiki account, but rather edits that came from IPs owned by SE, regardless of the actual account name?

    Re: Wikipedia Scanner

That's what I got from the term "IP range". If it worked by account ID they'd have you pick an account to look at on the second page, not an IP address.

I believe that's what the site is showing you, yes.
