    AMD or Intel

Long story short, I went on an ordering spree of parts and computers, I plan to give one to my nephew. I have two right now, everything is indentical (case, PSU, Video card, Memory) except for two things.

Processor and Motherboard, I don't know what the motherboards are though.

    One is a
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 (2.13GHz)

    The other is a
    AMD Athlon 5000+ x2 Dual Core (2.6GHz)

Also keep in mind I do not plan on overclocking. I have checked out Tom's hardware and the difference is minimal in some cases. The price for both systems is the same too.

I already installed and patched FFXI on the Athlon Machine because I received that one first.

Which also leads me to a second question. How would I move FFXI from my current machine to a new one without reinstalling and repatching?

Re: Which computer should I keep?

    I'd keep the intel personally.

As for ffxi install, you can avoid downloading the patch by doing the basic installs from discs and then dragging the updated POL folder over the top of it via your LAN. You'd still have to do a file check, but it'd save you a coupla hours.

    Re: AMD or Intel

    So I have two computers

Seagate 160 GB HD 7200 RPM
    2GB 800Mhz Memory Dual Channel
    nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256MB Card
    nVidia 640 Socket AM2 Chipset
    AMD Athlon x2 5000+ Dual Core Processor (2.6Ghz x 2) 1000 MHz HyperTransport 1024KB L2 Cache

Seagate 160 GB HD 7200 RPM
    2GB 800Mhz Memory Dual Channel
    nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256MB Card
    Intel LGA Socket 775 Chipset
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Dual Core Processor (2.13Ghz x 2) 1066 FSB 4096kb L2 Cache

Then I looked at this benchmark below. According to this chart the Intel is better. Well I ran FFXI benchmark on both the AMD kicked the Intel's ass by 15% (I got 4914 on the Intel and over 5800 and the AMD). Could it be that FFXI is an older game and newer processors don't really do much for it?

Also for the windows experience the AMD had a 5.2 and the Intel got a 5.1. I am not pleased since I moved all my files to the intel already

Keep the AMD and overclock it.

Intel: better servers CPUs, better desktop CPUs, less power consumption, better overclocking efficiency.

But in your case, go with whichever is cheaper.

    Re: AMD or Intel

Price is not a problem I already have both machines. I tried the benchmark again after downloading the drivers for the video card and my score went up to 5415 on the Intel then I did a fresh restart and got 6019. I am beginning to think it might be the video card, it tends to run hot (56 C idle). Anyone know a good place to download the ExperTool GPU fan control software? I had it before but can't seem to find it now.

nTune doesn't work with my GPU fan for some reason and I read somewhere that it's been confirmed there is a driver issue with nVidia and EVGA.

What kind of driver issue? I have 2 EVGA cards in my tower in SLi and havn't had an issue in almost 1 year now.

8600GT not being compatible with nTune Fan Control. You can increase the memory and core clock speeds but not the fan speed.
