57 SAM - Just came back - equip help

Hi Guys

I just came back to my SAM account after quitting several years ago, i came back earlier this year but on a new character.

With the new updates with 2handers being so broken i was hoping for some help with setting up my 57 SAM.

I have some gil that an old friend left me so i should be able to afford most of the good pieces you recommend. I already have a haub waiting for 59.

Hi Oxx. Currently, my SAM is also 57. I'm wearing:

Main: Raikiri, Battle Fork (Penta Thrust is rippin L.Collibri up atm. Doing like 600-900'ish dmg at this lvl) - Crits on both weapons do 175-220+
Head: Emp. Hairpin (considered the Valkrie/Walkure Mask, but was low in space)
Ranged: War Bow +1, Scorpion Arrows (even bow shots do 130-150 a hit on L.Collibri)
Body: Luisant Haubert (have Hauby lined up for 59)
Hands: Ochuido's Kote
Earing: Spike Earing, Intruder Earing (low in inventory space, or I'd use 2x Spike)
Ring: Sniper Ring, Garrulous Ring, Rajas Ring
Waist: Vangaurd Belt, Life Belt
Neck: Peacock Charm, Spike Necklace
Back: Republican Army Mantle (Royal Army Mantle looks nicer choice tho, Amemet+1 lined up for 61+)
Legs: Royal Knight's Breeches
Feet: Storm Gambieras, Fuma Kyahan

With the current setup, I'm tanking more than half the time in the parties I xp in from the high damage output (not sure thats a good thing).

Hope this gives you some direction.

thx for the input... are you using anything atm for your WS? i use windower and i know how to use windower macros and i wouldnt mind getting particular gear for WS only.

No, unfortuneately at the moment, I have 0 slots free for any new macros (all used from my other jobs). So I have no macro's for SAM. So I WS in whatever gear I am using.

However, I forgot to mention (i'll update previous post), I have a Garalous Ring (STR+3 AGI+3), Lifebelt / Vangaurd Belt (+3 STR +5 Atk), and a Peacock Charm / Spike Necklace. I usually use the STR stuff for the Katana, and the Acc stuff when I am using the Polearm. If i had room for macros, I guess I would try to find a balance of STR/Acc for whatever WS (ie. more acc/dex) for penta thrust, and more toward STR for the Great Katana), or use the fuma boots for TP build only, and the storm boots for WS. But alas, no room.

I usually use meat mithkabob because its really cheap, even tho I know its going to get eaten. I haven't gotten any of the SAM AF yet (been lazy), or I'd maybe try riceballs from wearing AF Gloves.

I'd make the following (non-ex) changes:
ranged: lightning bow+1
body: scorpion harness over luisant.
earring: 2x spike (as you said)
ring: grace ring / rajas ; switch to str+4 / rajas for ws (or dual grace/dual str) or acc rings (at least +4 accuracy)
waist: sword belt +1
legs: shinimusha haidate if you don't have rajas ring.

I'd make the following (ex) changes:
weapon: soboro sukehiro
head: Voyager Sallet
waist: swift belt


otherwise that's a pretty decent setup for 57.

You got some good suggestions on the replace gear in my setup. I bought the stuff like luisant at 45, and 57-59 wouldn't be much point in getting a SH for 2 levels with Haub lined up as that's basically one xp session (unless I had one already). I'd really like a Voyager Sallet also /sigh. So much gear, so little space.

I wish I had a soboro, been looking for a run. Though i was trying to get it before I progressed 50+, but I went 50-57 in 2 days.
Had the sword belt+1 at one time, tho now that STR = Atk, its basically 8 Atk (+3 STR included), over +12 atk (4 atk difference). Which was my reason for prefering the Vangaurd, one less item I have to hold/swap.

My archery is capped from RNG, so I like shooting stuff with the 66 base dmg of current bow (plan to try out sidewinder dmg next time I xp). But your advice is solid for the +3 DEX I can see for the benefit to acc.

Thanks for the advice too. I'd make use of it if I had room . Good for Oxx tho.

I actually still use the scorpion harness in my seigan macro (net change +30 evasion is nothing to sneeze at) although with how much time sam/war spends in seigan mode these days it might not be worth it so much - I'm currently doing most pickup exp as sam/nin for survivability.

this is a good point actually. I'm using a potent belt (meat build a-go-go) but I could see using the vanguard for 3str 5 attack vs. 12 attack. (I did choose pallas's over ochiudo's at 65 for similar reasons; I had enough attack and needed more strength.)

hasso is offensive, seigan is defensive.

you can only have one active at a time.
they have a 1 minute recharge, duration: 5 minutes

with hasso you have haste+10% acc+10 str+5~10(varies by level)
with seigan, third eye is improved (it's basically a ja utsusemi:ichi ), 30 eye recast goes to 30 seconds, parry rate goes up, and you can counter instead of anticipate.

seigan is good if you're about to get hit/are getting hit

hasso is good if you're not near tank hate. you'll pick up the rest as you go along.

I chucked my Level 1 GK for space a while back now I need it for my Af1. Was reading Wiki to see if I could restart it, but there's no instructions on how to restart that quest other than trading the NPCs some ores to get the items again, which doesn't work. Anyone?

you should be able to just buy one from one of the assistant npc's. I think it costs 30k, and you might need to have the quest flagged first.

You can actually buy another one from Jaucribaix for 30,000 gil after accepting the AF1 quest.
