routers and stuff suck :(

Ok... so in trying to set up some port forwarding thing, my stupid router like, you can't for some reason even access a particular 'page' in its setup, it just loads blank. So I was trying to set up some other stuff to see if i could get it to load, and think I set a static IP for my computer; right about the same time there was a hiccup in my connection and i dunno, whatever... anyway, so i was able to get on most of the day yesterday, np.

Then connection went out again, and blah blah, i cannot connect through my router, i keep getting that the IP already exists, etc; and cannot log into the router at all, it keeps timing out. And basically the router didn't seem to work at all, which sucks cuz we have VOIP. ;P

so now like, we have one computer directly connected through the modem, no problem... but when I try to connect mine right through the modem, it still doesn't work. Still getting the weird IP already existing warning...

and I don't know what to do and I can't really sit here and try everything cuz my father hates when I'm on his computer (like I am at the moment);

this is also basically me saying to the wiki peeps that I obviously can't really do much atm. Hoping to figure out something at least so I can connect via the modem tonight; we get a new router Tuesday.

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click Local Area Connection > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Check Obtain an IP Address Automatically

Vista:

Start > Right Click Network > Properties > Manage Network Connections > Right Click Local Area Connection > Properties > TCP/IP Version 4 > Properties > Check Obtain an IP Address Automatically

Hmm... i will doublecheck that now quickly, but I don't recall changing that in the first place, unless that was somehow automatic when I messed with the router.

Yeah, the IP problem on my own computer, yes; just not sure why the router went caput. Can't even log into it anymore

ok, plug your pc into your router goto Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

in the black box that pops up type ipconfig

post your ip and default gateway, the default gateway should be your router's IP

then you need to go in there and fix it

OR

usually there's a reset button on the back/bottom of common routers, holding these in for 10-30s with a pin or something will reset them to factory defaults

yeah, default gateway comes up blank plugged into router;

and the reset i've tried numerous times; there doesn't really seem to be a way to 'hold' it either, holding it in, it doesn't trigger anything to reset until you actually let it go; then all the lights blink and such and it resets. stupid cheap ass vonage router shit.

No, neither PC does/did (I wasn't able to use either for a while, as he was using his ). His was the one I did the ipconfig and such on, the router is in his office, so much easier.

this is a wired router correct? and you still arent pulling a gateway after a hard reset, sounds like you have a bad router, time to replace

ok, first when you have your pc connected to the router using the ethernet cable, make sure the light on the router is also on. ie if you connect from pc to port 1, the number 1 light should be on.

if you can see ip address/default gateway command prompt (ipconfig), you can double click on local area connection icon and go for support tab, click details. there you will see your ip address and default gateway number. the ip address should be 192 numbers and will be there if you connect the cable properly.

Yeah, if your not able to connect to the router settings hardwired, the router is more or less shot. 500 gil says it's a linksys...

What model router is it? You may be able to do a firmware reset on it and restore it to factory defaults. This may allow you to connect to it and reconfigure it again.
