Strategy's to fighting Tiamat/ khimaira

abunch of my Friends came together over the internet, and decided to restore our old FFXI characters. they are pretty well geared and stuff, but we havnt done any of the CoP/ToAU HNMs, my question is... what are the general strategies for killing Tiamat and khimaira- i think i get the basic strat for Tiamat, but what about Khimaira? how does your LS generally go about killing them?

Really as far as big HNMs go, there's a million different "strategies" for any of them. The reality is mostly just that it's all a collection of facts about the fight, and simply going from what's known about the fight and reacting to those factors is all there really is to it.

So, for the most part, read the wikis, read livejournals etc, find out what you need to know, and do what your people feel like works best from there. You'll have much more success on them that way than trying to follow some "stand a x position facing y with 2 pld/nin and 5 blms yada yada" type write up directly.

Tiamat-nuke in the air, use smn's on the ground
Khim-have good stunners when you see its tp move and nuke

Theres some decent info on tanking Khimaira in one of the PLD threads. Your best bet is to get proper experience through actually fighting these mobs though. The only real advice I can give at the moment is: don't give them too much TP, have PLDs sub NIN always, make sure tanks can keep shadows up and find a way to get your LS to Khimaira without screwing up and dying.

As for Khim, ----ONLY---- stun Fulmination which starts at 30%<. It WILL build a resistance to stun. As for Tiamat... Don't stand infront of it if you are a mage or melee, breath hurts. It's roar WS will remove hate from the target so let tanks get hate back if it happens. I've seen roar 2 or 3 times in a row and it wasn't pretty.

id suggest spending a day and going up to jorg in ulgeurand range and mess around with him till you can figure it out . thats really his main purpose is training zone for tiamat

That's a good idea. And, if you can take Jormungand down with less than 18 you can do Tiamat with 12, easy.

Basically - for these monsters, there is but one rule:

1) Don't give them TP.

That means use BLMs, SMNs, BLUs, and SAMs as your main damage. Never assault them, never melee them, etc.

All the rest isn't nearly as important. PLD/NIN tanks with fire resist gear for Tiamat, WHMs with Blessed Briault and AF2 pants and Barspell merits, full debuffs and DoTs, have dedicated people for adds (for Tiamat), have your BRDs sub BLM (for ES + Elegy on Khimaira), don't stun unless necessary (Fulmination), etc.

For Tiamat you don't really need that many "dedicated" people for adds. A couple of ninjas can kite Corses 'til they depop with AF boots, and the black mages in the main alliance can take care of any elemental aggro in a couple of nukes.

Anyone can kite corses. With the whole depoping nonsense you dont even have to get that far. Really dont even need enhanced movement since they like to stop and cast.

Yeah, but it's very little TP given (10 tp per spell), compared to someone meleeing it, which I think is his point.

- Bloodpact only when on ground
- Nuke only when in air

Khimaera
- Only stun fulmination which starts at 30%
- Tanks only stand below the ledge so if fulmination gets through only they get hit

Everything else is just using common sense.

- Good tanks with fire resist gear, whm's with bar merits, Fire Carol, etc. Have mages watch their hate. I prefer co-tanks - pld/nin and nin/drk.
- Add management. Pick a strategy, and follow it, regardless of what it is - kite, kill, whatever.
- If you don't want to BP or BLM it to death, have melee get tp and WS only.
- Get people that stun and won't fail.
- Other standard dragon stuff - stand on its feet on the ground, don't get hate standing on her tail, etc. etc.

Khimaira -

- Kill any melee that uses Platinum grip. He builds resists to stun very easily.
- Good tanks. Khim hits hard and fast and is a total bitch to elegy. Can be done, but high resist.
- Don't stun until fulm. Have stun order and stick to it. Know what to do if stun fails.
- Have mages stay the hell out of AOE.

In general, teach your linkshell what to do if shit happens, i.e. tanks go down, etc, because eventually something unexpected will happen. Have people that know what to do if it does so you can recover.

Don't do either of them with SMN dmg onry unless you want to take 4 hours and piss off everyone getting ToD. They'll try harder to claim it next time just so they don't have to sit through that again.

Khimaira
- Bring 2-3 BRD/BLM for Elegy sake.
- If you like to use BLM's to stun or DRK's, you can have your RDM's subbing BLM aswell for Slow2. If your RDM's are your stunners, have your WHM's ES Slow/Paralyze.
- Don't free stun; have a stun order.
- SMN and BLU are a good source of damage, because they don't give Khimaira much TP. Dreadstorm and Thunderstrike(?) can get annoying for the tanks.
- Use the ledge.

When its in the air. Firaga should be stunned.
