    PS3 - Backwards compatibility questions

So I'm about to get a Japanese PS3 from a friend, but I'm curious whether the backwards compatibility works for US games too or not. I have a couple US PS2 games but I'm not bothering buying a 60gb PS3 if I can't play them.
Also, the PS3 games are Region Free right?

ps3 games are region free, ps2 games are not.

on a jp ps3 only jp ps2 games will work and on a us ps3 only us ps2 games will work.

Nice! Thanks a lot man, now to choose my first game =P Must be something with good replayability/fun factor until the true games come. Thinking of Folklore, looks pretty good!

Re: PS3 - Backwards compatibility questions

I have another question regarding BC. Please forgive my ignorance, but I don't have PS3 yet, and I haven't found any mention of this through Google. Right now I'm torn between the 80gb and the 40gb (Not really considering the 60 because the PS2 games I still have seem to be ok with the software emulation). So my question is this: if the 80gb emulation is completely software based unlike the 60gb, wouldn't it be possible to steal that software and put it on the 40gb PS3? Save yourself $100 and still have the BC. Does anyone know if this has been done, or is it not possible with how the 40gb is configured (maybe it's not 100% software)?

Re: PS3 - Backwards compatibility questions

80 gb has no ps2 processor(emotion engine) but it still has the ps2 graphics processor in it. the 40gb has neither, thus no ps2 backwards compatibility.
also really, a 40gb ps3 is kinda small

if you have a ps2 though and arent getting rid of it the 40gig is ok.

Re: PS3 - Backwards compatibility questions

That makes sense. I knew the 80 didn't have the emotion engine, but I didn't know there was also a PS2 graphics processor. I had a feeling it might be a hardware issue though, or someone would've figured out how to get the software onto the 40gb.

Hard drive size isn't much of an issue since you can replace it with a laptop drive fairly cheap, I just have to decide if it's worth the extra money to be able to throw away my PS2 and have 1 less console laying around. (Plus, I'd rather have the game that comes with the 80 than that crappy Spiderman 3... that's right, I didn't like that movie. )

Yeah I'm actually getting the 40gb one since the backwards compatibility wouldn't work with my US games and I still have my PS2 anyways ~.~ Ceramic White JP one :D
