Prolly cuz the currency the US currently uses is "potential," or debt money, whereas gold and silver would be "real" money. In other words, the US wouldn't have enough real assets to back it up.

Good for economy(relatively), bad for people. Macroeconomics rarely puts into perspective that bankrupt farmer down the road, does it? Think about it, how does fiat currency support/enrich labor? It doesn't! It cheapens production labor, and rewards none production labor like finance management and, stock markets. Think of how many millions of jobs Americans have that are absolutely pointless and completely dependent on complex money movements?

Besides, majority of people are always better off on stable markets the hard currency is guarantees to provide. What we can't have with a gold standard are endless wars and absurd market speculation.
