    When should I get Vista

I want to get a new Laptop and am having trouble. All the Laptops I like in my price range are Vista. I know enough about XP just to get by, but can’t really find any laptop I like with it. So my main question is should I just get Vista, wait a little longer and get Vista, or look harder and find an XP Laptop I like?

P.S. If anyone can help me with picking a good Gaming Laptop for between $1100-$1400 would be greatly appreciated. (New, Used or Refurbished doesn’t really matter to me) One I was looking at is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... _-34220223

P.P.S. Also I’m in California so if the website is outside Ca. will be even better. :D

    Thank you in advance,

I suspect Vista will be a decent OS eventually. 98 sucked at first, XP sucked at first, it's an MS theme.

Re: When should I get Vista

Vista is ok. I've installed it on my home PC for testing purposes and it's been working flawlessly, no blue screens or random shutdowns and I've been installing plenty of applications that aren't Vista certified. Vista also seems to provide much better support for hardware problems, as soon as I plug something in that has an issue, Vista lets me know and points me to the website where I can find updated drivers (or just starts downloading them if it's a Microsoft product). It's not a huge jump over XP by any account, but it does a lot of little things which are nice. DX10 seems a bit overrated, I haven't seen much of a difference in my games.

Unfortunately that laptop isn't the greatest. Asus makes great motherboards, not computers. I'd go with a Dell XPS M1330, it's a good little laptop that's pretty powerful. Around the same price as the one you listed. I recommend XPS only because if there's a problem it has good support, you get a special number that actually goes to U.S. tech support. They make solid laptops regardless of what Dell-haters might have you believe.

SP1 is coming out shortly which then would be a good time to re-eval Vista. XP was the worst OS when it first came out, but SP1 fixed tooons of issues and made it what it is today, SP2 for XP didnt make the same dramatic changes. Even if SP1 makes Vista godly, I personally would still wait atleast another year before considering switching my main PC to Vista.

Wait for SP3 for XP. Vista seems all fine and everything, but you also have to watch out for the driver support for everything. If the company refuses to write drivers for vista, you're screwed.

get vista and install both, run with XP and use Vista only for DX10/DX10.1 games or when you feel the need to run a prettier OS

And that SP3 for Windows XP will improve performance dramatically, look at this link -->

Re: When should I get Vista

Im using vista, so I become familiar with it for work, I'm not really a fan of the interface personally, it looks pretty but moving everything around was very annoying. I won't claim its faster than XP, but its really not slow that I can tell, I don't ever get stuck waiting for stuff to load. This is probably because my machine has more than enough power for vista though.

Its these "crime against humanity" machines that preload with vista, that have 512mb minimum requirement of ram, oh god, its worse than it was trying to run XP on 64mb of ram. If you're forced to buy a notebook or a desktop prebuilt with vista, make sure you have 1-2GB of ram on it, or good luck.

Fixed for accuracy. XP was Win 2000 with a few minor bells and whistles, and 2000 was an acceptable OS from which XP inherited its support. The DOS line of Windows can't even be acceptable, and ME was the most headaching of them.

I read the article linked in there, and found this pearl within the comments:

Poor hardware choice leads to biased result...
1GB of RAM? Come on man! We use 64 bit Vista here with 32GB of RAM in each workstation. Throw in external 1TB hard drives configured as RAM drives and Vista performance matches XP cycle for cycle. When my CFO questioned our expenses on this Vista upgrade, I trotted my rep in to do the PowerPoint about lower management costs because of enhanced Group Policies and the more intuitive Printer Wizard. My CFO sat in complete silence and shook his head slowly. It was obvious he was in complete SHOCK AND AWE at the raw and unbridled power of Vista.

There is no real reason for a professional to adopt Vista, while there is quite a few ones of why they shouldn't. Changing hardware to accomodate software deficiencies is extremely expensive. Everything that Vista does can be done quicker and less resource demanding.

MS should take more time optimizing their code prior to release, and if they truly wanted to make Windows a reliable and fast OS, probably rewrite it from scratch, somehow like they did when they introduced the NT line (created by Digital employees). /point EWWregistry...

Be fair, at the time, 98SE was a good OS if it was installed by someone with a clue.

I'm being fair. Any DOS based OS can't be considered acceptable given its nature, maybe it could qualify for an acceptable toy.

It's fine now that they fixed their driver issues with 8 series cards. You should check the dell scratch and dent I saw a Inspiron 17" 2.0 Core2Duo, GeForce Go 7900GS, Vista premium 80GB HD for $1,099.00

They have good deals in there once in awhile.
    I bought a desktop from there before 160GB HD, 2GB PC6400 RAM, GeForce 8600GT, Vista Business, Core2Duo E6420 (2.13) for $399.99 back in July

Vista runs great on my system, but I built it for Crysis so yeah

No way I'd go back to DX9 visuals after seeing Crysis in DX10

With all due respect Win98se might not have been the most secure operating system but assuming you took some measures to protect it, ran pretty well and was fairly low in resource useage

/looks at winxp that doesn't quite run "right" without 1gb of ram unless its a clean install

The lack of file/user privileges system made DOS a joke of an OS.

And the performance of any Windows version ends up being quite retarded over time.
