Wonder how quick they'd sack you if you went on a banning/purging of stupid spree.

Wouldn't it be ZAM! (singular) is hiring? Sounds bizarre as is.

ZAM! is being used to refer to a company. Personally I'd say "IBM are hiring" rather than "IBM is hiring."

I could be wrong, but I think of a company as a plural generally, unless it's a sole trader.

I see what you're saying, but you just said "a company" above.. while companies are made up of disparate people, "a company" itself is a singular entity. So like.. "The managers at IBM are hiring" but "IBM is hiring".

Not trying to be horrible, I just kept reading over the thread title thinking "Why does that sound borked!"

[zom edit]: I wonder if they're looking for general site maintenance/management or someone to help deal with the DDoS.

Going to have to disagree, I think it's fairly common to use a company name as a collective noun.

    Re: ZAM! are hiring!

I think it looks borked because there's a ! in the middle of the sentance (and it's not followed by a capital A). Maybe that pluralization is a British thing.

Please note that collective nouns are normally treated as singular (the antelope are stampeding / the herd of antelope is stampeding)

    edit: here we go

In British English, it is generally accepted that collective nouns can take either singular or plural verb forms depending on the context and the metonymic shift that it implies. For example, "the team is in the dressing room" (formal agreement) refers to the team as an ensemble, whilst "the team are fighting among themselves" (notional agreement) refers to the team as individuals. More strikingly, this is also British English practice with names of countries and cities in sports contexts; for example, "Germany have won the competition," "Madrid have lost three consecutive matches," etc.

In American English, collective nouns usually take singular verb forms (formal agreement). In cases where a metonymic shift would be otherwise revealed nearby, the whole sentence may be recast to avoid the metonymy. (For example, "the team are fighting among themselves" may become "the team members are fighting among themselves" or "the team is fighting [period]".) See American and British English differences - Formal and notional agreement.

Alla is ok for looking up information on items or NMs.
The NMs are alphabetically sorted and there is a search function for any ffxi item in the game.
Also there is visual information on drops the only thing lacking is a condition for pop or the positions.

But for that i use : FFXI atlas.
Look up the item on alla and get advanced information on atlas.
    http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/

I wouldnt like to miss alla for the information provided.
But their forums suck so bad. Lots of, trolls no real moderator or admin to recheck posts.

Thats where BG comes in, with the latest news and updates informations.
But i wouldnt look up BG for any NMs or quests.
This is a forum to discuss about endgame and people that know ( mostly know ) what they are talking about.

So here is the perfect mixture, i have no reason to bash alla or atlas or bg.
Each site has its own good point for visiting.

Well yes, but most of the stuff ZAM! is good for can be replaced with somepage (search functions for item, mob and npc names), ffxiclopedia (one search function for just about everything), bg-wiki (I use it for the old school knowledge like exp charts and JA lists), or mysterytour (new and/or obscure quest instructions, but mostly obsolete now that other sites are wikis and can therefore update more than twice a year).

It's got to the stage where I communicate with so many nationalities that I no longer try to stick to conventions anyway. As long as my text makes a reasonable amount of sense, I'm happy.

Of course, I also just assume I'm always correct, it's easier that way.

It should be noted, the last entity that that questioned Shuemue's English Language Skills, was a goblin. And we all see what happened to him...

Anyway, I've found no one site has all the info I need. I use the ffxi wiki as a good starting point. If I need anymore info beyond that, I check a variety of sites. But I think I've only gone to zam once. I generally try to avoid it, not just because of the forums, but because of their history with IGE. Need to spread a message, that any site that hooks up with any sort of RMT outfits, will get boycotted. Obviously, I'm only one person, so it's more of a personal choice right now rather than a crusade.

I used to use Alla back in the day for EQ info (especially before lucy.fnord.net showed up). And noticing that it was multi-MMO, I kept using it after I started ffxi, despite the mistakes and incomplete spell lists and stuff. At least until someone let me know about mysterytour.

All I remember about Zam was when it got bought out by Gilsellers and the god-awful interface.

GUI felt like it was designed by a blind man.

    Center Centre

    Favor Favour

The funniest thing is when I'm on vent, and tell someone "You can't" . The way I say "Can't" sounds very similar to "Cunt".
