    The Swell Season and Taping Policy

    so elphaba and i gleefully got some great tickets to see the swell season(Glen Hansard of the frames and marketa irglova, the couple from the film "Once") in baltimore in may. i know this is probably random as hell, but has anyone else seen them and know their policy about taping the show? elph's of the mindframe she's taping it if it kills her(i've seen her do it too, she hides her mics in the clips for her overalls lol), but i didn't know if it was a venue by venue thing, because i know glen's band, the frames, allows taping.

    if it's any help, we'll be seeing them at the meyerhoff symphony hall in baltimore, which leads me to believe she's gonna be wearing overalls to the show, but being able to set up a rig and get a nice dat/minidisc of the show would be amazing. (mind you, not for sale, but just for trading of great live music. i wanted to clarify since most tapers understand that, but those who aren't familiar with what i feel like an old man calling tape trading, a lot of bands will let you tape their shows provided that you don't sell the shows, just trade them to other devoted fans).

    thanks a ton for any help, and if you're looking for an amazing show to see, get tickets to see these guys... if you're not convinced, you can do a search on npr.org's website for their complete concert from the 930 club in dc last year... there's a section called 'all songs considered' which has live shows from constitution hall and the 930 available for free download, and both the swell season's performance and the frames own gig a few months prior are both up there, and they are, suffice to say, fuckin deadly.

    see if they;re listed on http://btat.wagnerone.com/, if not try to contact the band themselves, afterwards contact the venue, if the band allows taping, the venue ususally doesnt care, however they wont provide you power or anything

    wow, fair play to you on that link, it was brilliant. here's the entry for the frames: "The Frames are completely taper-friendly. usually BA is allowed and i think even video. they almost always tell the venue, but if you have problems just get ahold of their stage manager and you should be fine. great band! tape away!"

    the problem is that the swell season(of whom glen from the frames is a member) doesn't have a website. all of their tourdates, etc, are posted to the frames' website, so i think it's safe to assume that the band themselves have no objection to it. what troubles me is the meyerhoff... not that i'm not looking forward to a gorgeous venue acoustically(it's where the baltimore symphony orchestra performs), but the example i gave earlier of elph covertly taping a band wasn't against the wishes of the band, it was because the band, the pat mcgee band, whom she is personal friends with AND who are one of the most taper friendly bands touring, forbid it, it's because they were playing wolf trap, in vienna, va. wolf trap, being a national park in addition to a gorgeous venue to see a show, doesn't allow taping, and the band had to demur to the venue's wishes... i tried searching for the meyerhoff's website, and closest it got was the BSO's website and several ticket reseller sites, so i just need to phone book them and give the box office a ring.

    and ya, i know they won't always provide power(tho some clubs like the 930 club actually have a strip in the back of the house just for tapers), but elph's rig can do i think a 4 hour battery run, so that shouldn't be a problem.

    thanks so much for that link, im totally bookmarking it b/c we've got kathleen edwards and dream theater/opeth coming up and i wouldn't mind having copies of those shows either :3

    wrote your board name down. we get a clean copy of the tape, you'll get a PM from me and we'll figure out a way to get you a copy of the show.

    until then:
    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=12100950 (the swell season)
    and
    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=9796328 (the frames)

    both shows from the 9:30 club, both great quality, but if i had to confess a bias, the frames show is in the words of glen hansard's character outspan from 'the committments,' 'fuckin deadly.'

    i used to be into it big time, anyone remember sharing the groove? awesome torrent site thats fallen off the face of the earth unfortunately

    then i didnt have a job, so i couldnt buy a decent rig, so now i fell out of it =/

    i should get back into it again i bet, someone should make some good recording shit for an iphone or something>.>;; i always prefered my mp3 recorder (it could record lossless wavs) over my minidisc...

    the band im going to see this month (explosions in the sky) is taper friendly even video, they dont care, unfortunately the pagaent is not =/

    the one show i had permission to tape both bands and everything (deathcab for cutie and ben folds) a couple years back in st louis, i fucked up big time,, was doing video, with an external mic, and i didnt know til after the show that the mic was off the whole time -.- boy was i pissed><;
