    Work + School?

I was curious how many of you work and go to school at the same time? Which is part time and which is full? What do you do? What are you studying under? Or do you just work? Or just go to school?

Anyway I work as a Security Guard for Securitas part time and want to major in Law. Sometimes I really wish I could work full time but just afraid I will get lazy towards my school work. Believe it or not standing around doing nothing hurts the feet a lot more than walking around and doing things. I get payed 10 bucks an hour, 20 hours a week. It's not so much money but it's good enough so that I can get the things I want and do things with friends.

    Re: Work + School?

I'm a full time student double majoring in physics and math and doing independent study on the side, and I'm working two jobs.

Luckily, both of my jobs are AT my college, lol. That at least cuts down on travel time and garuntees that my employers will work around my school schedule.

One of my jobs is as a physicist. I work under Dr. Buldum on his solid state/condensed matter physics projects. Most of what we've been doing is heat conduction on a small scale, mostly aiming at applying this to carbon nanotubes.

My other job is as a lab assistant in the honors computer lab. The good thing about this job is that I litterally get paid for doing nothing. I'm just there to fix minor issues with the computers/printers/etc. I'd say that on average, something goes wrong maybe once every two or three weeks, and it usually takes about 5 minutes to fix at most. The rest of the time is free time, which I usually spend posting on BG or doing homework or even finishing projects from my other job at this job.

The thing I hate about the University of Akron is that they'll only pay me for 30 hours max even though I typically work much more than 30 hours. I usually do about 10 hours per week at the honors computer lab, and anywhere between 30-50 hours per week at the physics department, yet the physics department can only pay me for 20 of those hours

If I wanted to I could only work the hours I'm getting paid for, but the work at the physics department is way too fun so I typically go way overboard.

full time student majoring in Criminal Justice. Had a PT job for 3 years, finished up notice about a week ago, enjoying a vacation for a bit then I'll find a new job. Want something close to the police work I want to do, but anything would be ok.

    Re: Work + School?

When I did my Undergraduate Degree I worked part time, some semesters up to or over 30 hours a week. I usually only took four classes per semester though, as five history/polisci classes + a PT job would have meant death to my social life (not to mention FFXI lol).

Right now I'm employed through a temp agency doing various office work positions while I look for a permanent job, as well as taking two Continuing Studies courses in Business on Monday and Thursday evenings. Those are long days, pretty much like a 10-11 hour day with a meal break in between work and school. The basic courses I'm taking are really just for my resume; I can honestly say I'm not learning much I didn't already know, and my teachers know it.

    Re: Work + School?

When I was in Community College I worked PT hours usually, 20-30 hours a week. With the school I go to now though I'm taking 20-22 credits a semester and have 40-80 hours of homework a week. Adding in the hour long commute to school and the girlfriend leaves me no time for a PT job on the side.

    Re: Work + School?

Worked 30 hours/week building Roof Trusses ($13/hr) and then did 20+ credit hours a semester for all 4 years except my last semester. My Last semester i did 12 credit hours and quit my part time job and started working for the company I was going to go full time with once i Graduated. And to top it all off I averaged 50+ days a year of skiing. And even had a preety decent social life to boot. Had it not been for the part time job I would have been constantly broke and it was probably my favorite job I have ever had. I miss college

    Re: Work + School?

It strongly depends on your major and the workload in your classes. I know there were some engineering classes of mine that were 3 credit hours which I would spend 15 hours a week outside of class studying/doing homework for (just for that one class) to walk out there with a C. Then there were electives that I would end up spending maybe 2 hours every month outside of class studying for and walk out with an A.

I guess the best way to figure things out would be to ask people in your own major or future major. It's comparing apples to oranges in this entire thread since there is a vast difference in difficulty/workload from major to major or University to University.

Oh I am not trying to find a balance or anything because I already have mine and it's perfect. I was just curious about everyone else.

    Re: Work + School?

Go to a community college full time for computer science, although chances are I'll never get anything out of it besides a few transferable credits. Work part time at a deli, it sucks but I get to work with friends at least. It's not a tough schedule really, 20 hours of work and about 20-30 hours a week going to classes/homework. Although I can't imagine taking on any more classes or work at school, I can't stand doing homework and chances are I either won't do it or will do it in my car just before I'm going to class.

When I was in college I had 20 hours of class a week and 40 hours of work. ZZzzzzzz. Needless to say, my grades were sub-par and I had little to no free time

Its required at my school. Its really nice for the practical experience and getting IDP hours knocked out of the way, but oh god does it suck. Especially right now in my field there are no jobs.

    Re: Work + School?

work 37 hours a week, in class like 12-13 hours a week or so, plus an online class that is supposed to take 4-5 hours per week, and how many other hours of homework. in short, it sucks. way too busy, never enough time to just sleep, god forbid. oh yeah and I also tutor english three days a week at school and am a peer mentor. the good news? I'm in my last semester at my community college, am carrying a 4.0GPA, part of an international honors society, and have a pretty stacked application/resume to put out to senior colleges. god willing when I transfer the hard work will have paid off. though I have no clue how the hell I will manage my current job, and a full classload at a "real" college taking 4 classes a semester.

    Re: Work + School?

I am specializing in English at uni. Before I took a break from school last year I was taking 4 courses per term (I think it's different for the American folks, but here we have classes that can go from sept to may instead of just sept to dec and jan to may, those that go from Sept to may are 1 credit each and others are .5). I was also working part-time at the school so it was pretty flexible, but I was also part of (and eventually president) of a Cinema Studies union where I had to attend a bunch of meetings, create events, answer public inquiry, deal with profs, etc etc. Was a busy time.

Now I'm taking 3 courses and am not working so I can keep up my GPA for an honours certificate. Also, 13+ books per course makes me hate reading.

    Re: Work + School?

I'm a full time student as a German major as well as working nearly full time as a line cook for a fine dining seafood restaurant (anywhere from 25-35 hours a week depending on how many shifts).

Yeah, it sucks. Seriously, don't work this much unless you are a not a fulltime student. I really have no time to do anything, and because of this I neglect my schoolwork for more freetime. I actually am making B's this semester, however I Know that if I were not working so much and not so concerned about my future (I am going to culinary school when I graduate) then I would be making A's easily.

In the words of one of my mentors, Thomas Keller, something like "If we worked to our fullest potential, we would literally amaze ourselves."

It's so true. I know if I really tried that I could easily make all A's and be the best line cook at my job. However I value my freetime more than that and therefore slack off some.

    Re: Work + School?

I'm finishing an Associates in Applied Science at a Community College, where I take 9-12 credit hours a semester. I take classes in the AM, and work in the afternoon at a friends garage. Homework gets done between class and work, at work, or just after dinner, then I can chill with the fiance a few hours and get my FFXI crack in after she goes to bed.

I normally sleep ~3-4 hours a night, I live purely on coffee, but I crash out hard on Friday nights.

The garage is dirty crappy work but it pays $18/labor hour, I get to do homework if there's nothing going on, and it keeps me afloat, although there's not much room for anything beyond insurance, food, and helping the fiance as much as I can with the mortgage and bills.

(I worked full-time to put her through school, now she's returning the favor but I still work to pay my own way on insurance, feed us, and try to take her out occasionally)

    Re: Work + School?

Today someone asked me if one of the computers had vista, and someone else had me put a lost flash drive in our lost and found, taking a whooping total of about 15 seconds out of my entire shift today. Man this job is so hard D:

(but seriously, this really is the hardest work I've done at this particular job all week)
