Laptop crashes FFXI when I close the lid

I'm currently using FFXI with windower-3.26 on my Toshiba-made Vista-OS Laptop. The game runs fine if I keep the lid open, but if I close my laptop for any longer than a second, it will crash a second after I open it up. This happens with or without using windower.

The settings on my power options say "Do Nothing" for when closing the lid, and I'd assume FFXI keeps running while the lid is closed, since I can hear ingame music, magic being cast, and /tell chime even with the lid closed. It just crashes the moment I reopen the laptop. Anyone know how to fix this?

(In before "Upgrade to XP" I'm already considering doing that)

What does the crash say? Or does it just freeze up and not respond? I know FFXI doesn't react well to resolution changes... which might happen if your screen flickers when you open it. I have no idea how to remedy this though...

dont close the lid>.>;; why are you closing the lid when you're playing anyway? something always happens when you close the lid, the screen goes off or something and then when you open it the screen comes back on and kills FFXI>.>;

Is it the same regardless of using SE's windower or the windower.net version?

It freezes for a second, blinks, then says "pol.exe has stopped responding".

Yep. Tried it with windower, windowed-without-windower, and normal FFXI, it crashes each time. Other programs don't crash, and I don't have true full-screen on windower, so that's most likely not the main problem.

It makes it easier to move my laptop if needed. I have a widescreen laptop, so it's a bit awkward to carry without the lid closed, and sometimes I need to quickly hide my computer for a second.

After trying CTRL + ALT + DEL while playing and crashing FFXI in the exact same way now, it might be just lolvista.

FFXI will crash if you change the resolution or do pretty much anything that takes it out of focus. You'll have to live with it I'm afraid.

i have a widescreen laptop too, just close it til theres like an inch left and dont close it all the way.. just so you can still move it normally, and not trigger the shutoff for the screen

mostly due to the reason that when you close the laptop lid, it will go into standby or sleep mode. Which means that most program will go into somewhat pausing mode.


either just leave like 1 inch, or can just set the screen to be automatically turn off after 10 mins or so.

Be sure you have "Do Nothing" for both battery and plugged in.

It's because you have Vista installed. When I had Vista installed on my laptop I'd have the same problem. When you set "What happens when you close the lid" to "Nothing" it's not actually doing nothing. It's basically unplugging the display from the computer. If you have your sound loud enough, you can probley hear the "you plugged in new hardware" sound when you close/open the lid.

When I went back to XP, everything worked fine. XP just shuts the monitor off while still giving it power.

I had this same issue on my Dell XPS for quite a while. Running Windows XP, not Vista. The problem definitely resembled the display being "unplugged" every time the lid was closed, though there was no "add new hardware" chime/dialog associated with it. Whenever the lid was opened back up it would display, then blink to black, and display again. It ended up having nothing to do with my settings. I upgraded to a newer nVidia driver release and suddenly the problem was gone. I would suggest checking for newer drivers for your graphics card. Anytime that FFXI, windower or not, loses the D3D device, FFXI will freak the fuck out and crash. Probably because SE is too fucking stupid to handle device lost and recreate all the device objects. You can see this happen when you bring up the Windows Security dialog with Ctrl+Alt+Del. Probably happens if a fullscreen D3D screensaver kicks in also.

It definitely did. Playing any sort of video in media player, etc would kill FFXI as well. So glad the new drivers fixed those problems.

I wasn't able to fix the problem in Vista. Let us know how you fix it if you manage to.
