Dreamworks to do 'Ghost in the Shell' Live Action

Dreamworks to do "Ghost in the Shell" in a live-action 3D sort of movie it seems. Unlike Akira and a couple other adaptions from anime, this could actually turn out good seeing as Spielberg will be involved with it and what not.

Thoughts?

To see Avi Arad? The Marvel guy? I sure didn't expect him to be involved much less Spielberg.

Lots of anime/comic type movies being tossed around and comming out here lately. One of them is bound to be good and this one has potential, i think.

As long as Dreamworks has a hand in it, it should be decent as far as graphics go. If it ends up like Beowulf, meh, won't be horrible. But since I've got a hard-on for Motoko, I won't be pleased at all. Unless they find some FLAWLESS woman to play her.

Live action homage is nice and all but I wish they'd leave my childhood alone.

They'd have to completely turn around the storytelling and after enough changes I don't think I would accept it as a Ghost in the Shell movie. Through everything most of GITS is dialogue with a bunch of men and women sitting around, punctuated by occasional scenes of netdiving and the Major punching through giant tanks with her bare hands. Even if it is Spielberg directing I doubt he'll resist the temptation to swing the balance of the story all the way towards the 'punching through metal' bits. At which point he's made a Terminator film, not so much a GITS film. Hollywood's made an entertaining film recently about the global refugee crisis (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120188/) themes in SAC but not so much about the problems of identity and meaning in a world of electronic brains (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212720/) theme.

at first I was like "WTF DREAMWORKS? LOL" but, then I saw Spielberg actually chose to work on it, I'm feeling hopeful about this now. There's no way it will be completely faithful to the series, but it may actually be halfway decent... keepin an eye out for this one.

I'm kinda worried... Spielberg has a tendency to go overboard with the special effects and schmaltz (see: ET, Close Encounters, AI, Jurassic Park). However if he chooses to let the story shine and not the special effects (see Schindler's List) it could be an incredible film.
