Ok, here is the deal: new begining

Ok, I finally got tired of playing WoW and I wanna come back to FFXI. Thing is, I don't want to come back to the same character, I wanna start a new one. Thinking of rolling a tarutaru... now with me being out of the loop, here's the thing: Are tarutaru warriors or monk (can't decide which one) viable to play through to 75...I know when I alst played I was getting almost no invites at all...would have to /whm to solo but took sooo long... I was reading that with the new expansion, you can solo in campaign. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I got about 100k I can transfer to new character so should be good for starting gear until I get THF to 15.

One last thing, is Fishing still a viable craft...loved fishing on my last character, and made some decent money. Thanks for any input

    Fishing is still good.

And as for race, it only matters a little bit. There are great (race) (jobs) across all servers. Fair enough you might lack a bit of HP/STR as Tarutaru but... mweh.

And you can solo in Campaign, but not effectively until 50~ I'd say. You can penalised too on EXP until 61.

Tarutaru's have high MP and INT, low STR and HP, and are generally geared more towards mage classes than melee classes such as Warrior or Monk. This does not mean, however, that being a Tarutaru makes you incapable of playing or doing well at those jobs; other races will just be a little better.

Final Fantasy XI has fewer players now, and that usually manifests itself the most when people try to get parties at lower levels. That means that it's usually par for the course (at least for me) to be one of maybe two or three searching in the lower levels, making it pretty much impossible to make a party leaving your only option to just sit there and wait. It's true that melee classes don't get as many invites as mage classes, however due to the lower number of people overall, you will often have less competition for a parties melee slot and therefore quicker invites. Sometimes.

It's true you can solo in campaign, however it's not extremely worthwhile until you're in your 70's. And even then, it'll never be as profitable as a good party, so it's not a replacement for parties but rather just something to do when you're in the mood for a change of pace and still want a little exp. With things like exp bands and newer, weaker mobs, solo'ing is much more possible now than it was in the past, and while at times it can be very satisfying, participating in a party is still the main and best way to advance, so don't think you can fly to 75 alone.

I don't think anyone is really prejudiced against taru DDs these days (maybe taru PLDs though, sorry Judai ;P). One of my favorite DRKs to party with is a taru. My girlfriend has MNK75 (no BB yet) and can hold hate through merit parties while semi-afk.

30% of the time, other races will be very very slightly better. Oh, the other 70% of the time they'll have TERRIBLE gear, so your still going to outdd them no matter what. If your going to choose between WAR and MNK, i'd say MNK, as it's less STR dependant and more ACC based.

I can't imagine starting this game over from scratch at this point. No matter what job you choose, i hope you have a really tight circle of friends or a great LS who will give you a hand with completing all the RotZ and CoP missions again.

Taru MNK does backflips. What more has a melee class to offer?

But seriously, pick whichever race you want to see on your screen for hours on end. Any race can play any job to an acceptable degree, so don't base it on that unless you're into micro-management.

Use plasticsurgeon and screw starting over. I'm half tempted to list of all the things you'd have to do again, but i'd be here a very long time.

If I get my way there will eventually be a paid one-time race change feature implemented.

If I lost my character I wouldn't come back at all to the game at this time.

Having to re-do all the missions, quests, level all the different jobs, get all the items again, getting into a craft again, etc.

No, It would be too late for me to start as a 'new player' again.

To OP: Good luck starting from zero again, tho you might still have your older char with money or something like that? That should be good then. PL yourself too.
